The trouble is we are generally too selfish as a nation and we want someone else to pay.
This statement sums up the UK to me
Every time we try to fund anything from state the selfish and greedy ensure they get in on the food chain. This ensures the investment rarely reaches the issue. Every time more money is pushed into the NHS we just see more bureaucracy tiers and streams of consultancy firms all swallowing up the money.
I would also argue that the whole UK structure is broken too. If you look at European tech firms their heads of department are usually highly skilled tech based people who really know their stuff. But in the UK you can be a manager of a burger chain one minute and in a high tech department the next. People are often employed on their management "experience" alone and our politicians are no different.
Both have no idea what it is they wish to manage they just want the job of managing. They then spend money employing the consultants, who are basically just glorified sales people. They too often have little idea but they will happily cost and advise a solution
