Yet another what car? #1616332

With my work life finally becoming what I have dreamed of for sometime, in approx 4 months I will be in a position to replace my little "Stop gap" Panda which lasted 3 years smile.

I am a little fussy and don't want a mundane dull car which makes it rather difficult to find something that fits my requirements which are rather simple:

1. Fun to drive
2. Intersting to look at
3. 4 doors

On my list in order of heart preference are:

1. Guilietta TBi - I just love the looks of this car, but that is all I know about it
2. Passat R36 - Nice looking car with a lovely engine note
3. Audi S4 - Slightly bland looking but hell of a car (RS4 out of budget)
4. Forester STI - A little different, fast, fun

Any real world experience of the above or is there something I haven't thought about yet?

Budget is up to 10k, maybe stretch for the right car.

I refuse to go PCP, although I know there are lots of decent cars on PCP. (Unless the KIA Stinger comes as a bargain that is smile )

The quattroporte has crossed my mind, but fear the running costs may be just a little to high. Not so much day to day, but when something does go wrong.

Same for the A8 W12.

Had the A8 deisels been in range they would have been on that list for sure.

I had thought about the 300C, but that got poo poo'd very early by she who must be obeyed. I was considering one even before the change in fortunes.

Just checked and the A8 diesels are in range. Thanks Danthe Manc.

You maybe able to find a decent S8 within budget too. It's a lot of car for the money

Auto or manual? Petrol or diesel?

New style XJ or a look-alike XFR (and a badge with the change from £10k wink )

Phaeton? Or (Passat) CC if you like VW's

Mercedes CLS?

A couple of weird ones.

Honda Accord Type s-type exec 2.4
Mazda6 2.3 i MPS

I have the first and love it, but now hanker for the Mazda. Both between £3-4k! Why spend £10k?

E90 BMW 335i Saloon

Peach of an engine (I've owned a 335i Coupe and an M135i Hatch) which is buttery smooth and very quick. Great for having fine but also nice and plush for cruising. Easily tuned if that's your thing. A remap see's around 380bhp.

This would 100% be my choice of car and I'd recommend one with m sport trim and iDrive. Cars build after September 2007 also have cheaper tax. Earlier versions are expensive to tax £270 Vs £440 if I remember correctly.

Ignore the performance stats in this advert. They show the 320d figures for some reason. These are 306bhp standard and sub 5 seconds after a remap.

I’m a hot hatch fan and since you’ve referenced the Giulietta here are some alternatives with 5 doors:

Focus ST

Golf GTi

Mini Countryman Cooper S

Leon Cupra K1

When the second generation Focus was launched I quite liked the look of the range. But for me they seem to have aged poorly and I now really dislike their looks hurl

Maybe it's because the series 3 Focus looks much nicer, especially in RS or ST trim? I'm not sure what it is but I've really gone off the older car.

It's got really old, really quick, hasn't it. Mk1 Foruc RS looks fresher now to my eyes.

Is any Focus actually attractive? They are good cars but all of them look awkward.

Not yet. Need to arrange some test drives. Based on reviews from normal people tje alfa wont be suitable.

The 535d and big Audis are looking strong at the moment.

Flying to canada for 2 weeks so will start test driving after that.

I quite like my ST mk2 and don't consider it ugly or awkward at all - in fact many ST owners prefer the face-lifted mk2 to the mk3.....opinions are like bum-holes, everyone has one...

... but yours is also just an "opinion" smile

Looks is subjective - there is no right or wrong and one opinion is no more valid than another's (unless you are a successful designer, I guess).

It would be boring if we all liked the same things.

Finally have an udpate.

Had made the choice not to buy another car, but plow the money into my VW Transporter.

That is now in the bodyshop having had all rust removed and being painted a whole new colour and has been for about 6 weeks now, which was never an issue as I had my little Panda.

Sadly i wrote the Panda of a 2 weeks ago and needed something quick.

My local Alfa Dealer had a Giulietta 2.0 jtdm that ticked most of the boxes (Just not the fast bit) and I am in love smile.

SOrry for the thread resurrection.

Hah - I never saw this thread and only read it from the top for the 1st time just now. I was going to say get the Alfa and there's a reason you listed it 1st and head over heart is this reason you're on this forum in the first place. Glad you got the Alfa albeit a different model as unlike the others it's got soul.

Good choice. At least you went Italian.

We've been happy with ours (jtdm 150) despite a few niggles. It is a lovely thing to look at and the drive is quite involving..
