Hi, after some advice please. I’ve put down a deposit on a 20vt6. On the test drive there was mega judder under braking. Felt like warped discs, but Is there anything else that can cause this on a coupe? It’s fitted with mtech grooved discs.

I agreed to buy subject to this being resolved, but the seller has offered a price reduction without changing the discs or pads as his garage couldn’t get hold of the parts in time. That’s my fault as I asked to collect on Easter Monday.

I have the same issue on mine - when I have not driven enthusiastically for a while...

My discs are exactly the same too.

A fast drive with lots of braking hard and hey presto the judder is gone.

Thanks, I did wonder if it might be glazed pads. I believe the car has been extensively tracked prior to being bought last year, so possibly might not have been driven enthusiasticly enough.

Also think it might have a cracked manifold, as was ticking when cold.

That is the give away of a crack for sure - could you see any white residue on the manifold or was the heat shield still in place?

Heat shield was still in place so couldn’t see the manifold.

I’m a sucker for blue, so it’s a foregone conclusion!

Whilst the brakes have a judder, do they have any bite?
I have the MTEC discs and my biggest complaint is the lack of feel and bite, rather than necessarily their stopping power.
Like your judder, that may be more a pad issue than the discs?

The judder can be build up of pad material on the disc which clears under repeated hard braking - just don't stop completely when you are in this process. A dual carriage way late at night is a good place to do this.

Have a read of this guide for cleaning the brakes.

Thanks Gunzi, I’ll give that a try when I pick it up.

Has picking your new coupe up and "testing" the brakes cured the issue?

I bang on about this often but....have you checked the tyre pressures?

Hope its resolved.

I haven’t had chance to do any heavy braking yet, but I’ll be checking tyre pesssures and swapping wheels front to rear as I think I’ve got a bent wheel.
