Motorist using a laser jammer to fool speed detection equipment sent to jail for 3 months and £1500 fine, I remember toying with the idea of one of these about 15 years ago, I have never heard of anyone being convicted of successfullly using one. To me the harsh sentence is obviously to have a deterrent effect on other motorists.

To think an elected MP who repeatedly lied about not driving her vehicle was also given 3 months gaol rolleyes

Well yes... the general idea is probably that if you don't have an illegal jammer, you might drive with a bit more regard to the speed limit?

Aye, rightly or wrongly this sort of offence really doesn't deem a custodial sentence in my view. Far severe crimes are treated more lenient. The motorist is treated like a cash cow in every turn, & nobody can change my way of thinking.

In Charlie_Croker's example, the chap was charged with perverting the course of justice. This is the same law that gets you if you claim someone else was driving when you get a speeding tell-me-who-was-driving notice, or try and bribe a juror, threaten a witness, or indeed try to use a jammer for laser or radar speed detectors.

It's considered a very serious offence, often more so than the initial offence would have been, and it usually carries a jail sentence. Whether you agree with that or not is a matter for your MP (or you could stand for parliament yourself on that platform) but as it stands, that how it is. It's not a motoring offence in and of itself.

Of course, if you choose to drive in excess of the limit, many people will have limited sympathy. For some reason, on a car forum, some people don't like the limits and seem to believe they have a god-given right to do anything in a car they want to. As above, if you want to change the limits, talk to your MP (or stand for parliament...)

How do you feel about the EU requirements for speed limiters to be fitted to new vehicles in a year or two?

Two different offences, Rob - He didn't get the time for driving like an idiot; he got it for actively trying to make it impossible to prove that he was driving like an idiot.

My point was the disparity between an MP and her continued and repeated lies and dishonesty in comparison to the motorist who having ADMITTED the offence got the same sentence of 3 months!!!

Thats correct but he did not injure or threathen anyone like the other gentlemen with the zombie knife for which he did not get any jail time until the press got hold of the story He had 18 prevoius offences for knife crime . I know perverting the course of justice is a very seroius crime

As someone who worked within the law, enforcing it and being frustrated by the sentencing outcomes I just thought I would let you know that it’s an adversarial contest between state and defendant- nothing to do with fairness, parity or even the truth. It’s a little less frustrating once you get you head around that

I agree, but once all the BS and legal games by both sides have been concluded and the defendant is found guilty, a small mircacle at times given the attrition rate and the amount of cases that are binned before reaching trial, the Judge is the one who decides the punishment and that is where it appears the lack of parity and the Spanish Practices (corruption and favour) are again evident which is puzzling given sentencing guidelines etc.

Whether it is gender, just look at the sentencing of women it is invariably far below the punishment given to men for similar crimes (aptly evidenced recently by a female Judge who stated whilst sentencing the defendant had she been a man she would have gone to prison!). a person's race or the defendant's shall we say 'connections' or social backgroun/class, position in society.

I actually still have some faith in the Criminal Justice System in the UK; but absolutely none for the Family Court System and associated legislastion as that is an abherration..

Slightly off the original topic but still with the feds, it's pretty well known (up here anyway) that the Highland highway cops are far less lenient shall we say than other areas of Scotland. cop redcard

Yes I think they must be in competition with North Wales police.

Yes the closed nature of the family court and some of the abominable decisions that put people at greater risk are a whole other matter. There is potentially some light at the end of the tunnel here as the closed hearing approach is going to be subject to review and scrutiny for the first time
