I am thinking of replacing the front speakers with
Alpine SXE-1725s

They are advertised on ebay as Fiat Coupe replacement speakers and seem to fit but have a built in tweeter. Does that mean I will have to disable the crossover or the existing tweeters? If so where is it located thanks.

I would definitely suggest you use component speakers, since the tweeter placement is quite important. If it's placed down as in the coaxial setup, the highs will be muffled by the legs and surrounding interior. The bass & lower tones do not suffer as much from this, so that's why they're placed down there.

Thanks but I was not planning on disconnecting the existing tweeters. I understand there is just a capacitor in series with these to filter out bass and no crossover on the door speakers. If that is the case it should work but might have to reduce treble volume 3db or so.

Settled for this in the end: Alpine SPG-17CS. Will install this week.

Replaced all 6 speakers in the end. The rear surrounds had completely disintegrated! All sounds great now. A few tips.

No need to remove cigar lightercor install relay for 12v supply. Just run a wire to piggy back fuse in fuseholder. Test for a fuse that is ignition switched.

New rear speakers sound good fitted to standard locations a long as they are reasonably airtight and panels are fixed securely. The important thing is to have a tight seal front to back and install as close to the existing grill as possible. Most of bass comes from front pair anyway. They must be concentric cones. Alpine does a great one.

Hi Kevin

Did you fit the Alpine SXE-1725s in the front in the end? (my driver speaker is dead and will need replacing, hence the question)

Cheers,

DS

Hi DS
No I didn't but these are ideal for the rear. I installed the Alpine mid/bass single cone units as stated above in front. Superb...especially bass! As I said didn't bother with crossover for these.

Thanks Kevin

Think I know what speaker replacement I’m adding to my shopping list now smile

Hi Kevin

Are the Alpine SPG-17CS speakers ok for a direct replacement for the front speakers? I don't want to change the dash tweeters, just the front speakers.

Thanks

Simon

Hi Simon. Yes they are and very good indeed...especially bass. It's only the rears which need a concentric tweeter.

Thanks Kevin, that’s really helpful. A direct swap is something even I could complete!!

Looking at the grills on my front speakers, I decided that they could do with a refreshing coat of "satin black".

Do they just prise off or does one have to remove the door card and release them from the underside?

They just prize off easily. Replaced mine with the ones that came with the Alpines....look better and much stronger. They are a direct fit and just screw into the driver mount.

Always best to replace the tweeters with the ones that came from the set, and fit the crossover (if there's one).

Yes indeed. Particularly to fit the crossover for the tweeters not so important for the bass midrange (and a bit fiddly to do so).

When I changed my front speakers, I just bought a set of cheapies from halfrauds, while they do sound much better than the original ones, they've got the tweeter 'built in'. I didn't change any wiring or add in a crossover or anything like that, have I messed up?

Hi Morrison. Not really as the standard crossover is just a capacitor in series with the tweeter so the door speakers are run full range. I expect you can adjust the treble using the head unit sufficiently. The only issue is that dedicated bass speakers usually give deeper bass - the Alpines suggested are especially good. Halfords don't seem to be as good value as Amazon either. You are also paying for a tweeter that is redundant!

Thanks Kevin, definitely something to think about for the next ones, I fancy having a decent setup in the near future
