I've just read that someone has converted an MX5 and there is the somewhat controversial electric MGB conversion, but has there ever been an electric coop?
I'm assuming that given the amounts spent on them it won't be long before an electric option becomes cheaper then all the tuning extras. That said given the comparative rarity of the coop it's unlikely there will ever be an off the shelf kit but someone may do a bespoke job. Am I right in thinking it will be more difficult with a FWD?

Not tried one, but would think some form of adaption plate could be made to remove the engine then bolt the electric motor to the gearbox.....maybe😃

There’s a guy on YouTube doing one https://youtu.be/kQ2qaf_isfs

I don’t see why FWD would make it any more difficult, some of the classic conversions utilise the original gearbox but an electric motor is significantly smaller than a 20VT block and ancillaries. Finding somewhere to place the batteries would be the challenge.

There was a show on quest where they did all manner of conversions called vintage voltage. I can’t remember if they did anything FWD though, but there have been numerous classic minis converted to electric.

From the video it looks as though it's going to take a while.

We should setup a section of the forum devoted to planning
this out for the coupe

There's a company in mid Wales that does these conversions, including adding Tesla motors etc. But for a classic 308 Ferrari conversion they quoted around £60k....which is a bit steep for a Coupe.

shocked shocked

They do 2 options.
1. A mild conversion keeping power sensible using original gearbox etc.
2. The v. fast version which has double the power, meaning full Tesla running gear and Mods to strengthen the chassis.

0-60s are under 4 seconds....

£60K? about half the annual maintenance costs on the average coop!

Seriously though the costs will come down and they will be future proofed. I've seen quotes for £20k using 2nd hand power units (not specifically for the coop), I bet there are plenty on here who've spent more than £20k on their coop!

For me it would only be something I’d consider if fossil fuels were outlawed. I’ve owned my coupe for 2.5 years and only done about 3k miles, so I see it as more as a hobby than a method of transport. I’m not against electric, in fact I have an affinity to it as my grandad was a milkman so spent many of my childhoods days riding along at 20mph smile but I’d miss the 5 cylinder burble.
