My house is a constant voyage of discovery - especially as it seems to be filled with old tech and other architectural oddities

Cantilever open stairs
Electrical underfloor heating (set in the concrete slabs on both floors)
Radio wiring (some heavy duty coax - radio ham? Or just TV?)
Strammit roof (shallow pitch - now set under a normal roof)

But my latest find surprised me - it seems that the bathroom (at least) has ceiling heating panels - 80v between the rafters heating elements under the insulation in the loft. I suppose they may have been there to minimise condensation - given that heat rises.

Anybody know anything about it?

I've seen houses which have it all over not just bathroom, around the 60s if I'm not mistaken. Look up electric radient celing heating

Sounds like every day is a school day! I'd never heard of Stramit. The heated ceiling sounds as though it is a condensation thing. You can get heated mirrors, so perhaps it's an extension of that thinking.

Thanks for correcting my spelling of it, Jim - I’ve never actually looked it up. It’s interesting that it is actually straw

http://isobioproject.com/partners/stramit-international-strawboard-ltd/

The asbestos surveyor (1960s built house as far as I can tell - found a bit of newspaper from late 60s tucked in behind an old pipe) was surprised to see the Stramit not least because the house has two roofs.

Given this house has only been up 60 years or so, there’s been so much change - possibly because it was a horrible house built in a fab location,

Wasn't trying to be a Smart arse, MRS, just took the spelling off the website! You'll have to give us a tour when times are better, pointing out the architectural quirks!

Sorry, Jim - reading it back, my comment doesn’t come across in the tone I intended (ie being appreciative of the correct spelling)

Many (most) of the quirks have thankfully gone - my (sadly late) architect said they must have gone to quite some trouble to get things so wrong with the proportions of the building. Nothing some heavy machinery couldn’t improve though. I should develop a web page with the highlights of the job.

Take the kitchen, for instance - it was on the first floor and, for a 5-bed, 3 bath house, is now a small single bedroom/study. It was cramped with more than one person in it.

The living room downstairs was split-level with a small stone wall dividing it. The front door would have suited a small cottage and the downstairs ceiling (concrete) was barely above your head.

And the stone front wall (60/70s angled chimney style) would have shamed the north face of the Eiger. It was bloody ugly.

So I wonder what attracted you to it when you decide to buy/rent it?

Location, location, location.

The image doesn’t do the view justice - “I can see for miles and miles”, I’m 4 minutes from work, 10 mins from M4 and 15 mins from London to Bristol mainline.
