Yes I know, here I go asking a single model car forum for a model I haven't owned for *checks notes* 10 years about a *checks notes* completely unrelated computer issue but we are where we are!

In advance of a cheeky CPU upgrade I've recently upgraded my Bios (1.00 to 3.40 via 1.90) to a version that would support my existing CPU and the new one. All well and good in Windows but Mint now takes a full 5 minutes to boot. The Mint logo appears at about 35 seconds (incidentally the rough time it takes Windows 10 to reach login) but then nothing happens for 5 minutes. A Google reveals the following commands (new to me but look useful for future troubleshooting) and outputs which point at some form of networking issue but beyond that I'm stuck. Any ideas?

Code
me@mymachine:~$ systemd-analyze
Startup finished in 17.881s (firmware) + 3.729s (loader) + 6.274s (kernel) + 5min 4.610s (userspace) = 5min 32.496s
graphical.target reached after 5min 4.600s in userspace

me@mymachine:~$ systemd-analyze blame

<-- And a load of other stuff that was all less a second -->
                                               >
me@mymachine:~$ systemd-analyze critical-chain

I know, he's helped me many a time along my Linux journey, I just thought I'd open it to the floor. I do realise that with the thread title I might as well be shouting Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice though. laugh

Wow, even what I can see on the bottom bit of that list as I type this brings back memories. laugh

I was often in stitches at the antics of Willy Chin.

I hate systemd with a vengeance... it's the MS way of doing stuff, shoving it all into one big blob of code that makes it difficult if not impossible to make sense of any issues. The idea is that everything happens at once, instead of one after the other, thus speeding up the boot...

I agree it's a network issue, but don't know where to start with that... but I note a systemd update was issued this morning for mint, which might be worth checking?

I did look this morning but didn't see anything, I'm not on that machine to check now though. Another possibility is that as it was definitely after the Bios update, some some setting has changed to default that's affected this.

As the cherry on the cake, the new CPU that I did the change for came DOA so that's been sent back for a replacement. If the new one works fine then I'll be able to look at later Bioses/Bios's/Bioss (plural?). The one I upgraded to was the last one that would support my old CPU (which is back in now) and the new one at the same time. If the replacement works fine I have a few more options that are more recent.

Sort of fixed. I put the replacement CPU in today and boot time has gone down to 1min 18s without changing anything else, I know it's a faster CPU but it's not *that* much faster!. Still slower than Windows so there must be something up but at least I don't have to plan in advance when I want to use Linux. Networking is the still the main cuplrit at 35 seconds but it certainly beats 5 minutes.

There must be something in that particular version of the Bios that doesn't agree with a Linux/Pinnacle Ridge combination. I did ask ASRock but they didn't bother replying. I was stuck with that Bios as it was the latest version that would support my existing Pinnacle Ridge and the new Matisse. Now that I don't need Pinnacle Ridge support anymore, I can look at the newer Bios versions for my board.

He giveth and he taketh away! In amongst this I've discovered that half of my RAM has died so the 1min 18 above may not be a fair comparison. Another RMA it is then.
