Good morning, I have just bought a very cheap yellow non-turbo Coupe on eBay. The man says he does not have the V5C and also it is due a cambelt. Do you think this is a scam?
It is in Bristol, do any of you know the car and if so would you meet me there when I go to pick it up? This is my first post for a long time. Did you miss me?
All the best
AnnieMac

Hi Annie, welcome back smile

That's a bold move - looking up Google it comes up with the following:

You are legally allowed to sell your car without a log book (V5C) as it only acts as a proof of registration and not as a proof of ownership. You'd need to provide the buyer with a bill of sale which would include all the information that the buyer would need to apply for a new log book using the V62 form. - 8 Jan 2021

You may also have read this CarGuide article which goes through most of the circumstances in which a car could be sold without the V5C.

Having said that I don't want to sound alarmist as I'm unaware of the circumstances.

Fingers crossed there aren't too many things needing attention apart from the cambelt!

Hi Annie welcome back!

I think I saw the one you mean and it looked o.k. in the pictures

No V5 isn't the end of the world but did you do MOT History and HPI checks?

When you collect it you'll do the usual checks (oil pressure, everything works, etc)

If its not as described, you don't have to complete the purchase

Why has it been re-listed if you've bought it? I can see the old auction, but there's a new one as well

EDIT - just noticed the oil pressure is well below 1.5 bar and it looks like the temp gauge is at cold. This would be enough to put me off.

Airbag light is on, and it has previously failed its MOT on rust - I'd want to know a lot more about how this was dealt with

Any Coupe at that price point is going to come with a decent to do list. You'd just need to decide if that's the end of the market you want to get into and are happy to spend your way through

I have pulled out of the sale, because I was worried about driving it home when the cambelt is due. Also, can you get spares for the non turbo ones?

I thought the comment added to the title was totally unjustified considering this.

The ad itself was, shall we say, economical in its description too....

Depends, but most items are probably available as after-market if you can't get OE.

AnnieMac, In an instance like this I have used a car transport guy via Shiply. Just a thought if you really do want to buy the car.

I would like one to use as my daily driver and I like the older non-vis non-turbos. I had a green one. My red coupe was a vis and had to be sold after a minor accident, the paintwork was bad with lacquer peel but I still recouped (pardon the pun) the original sale price which was £800 even with the accident damage which meant it needed a new door. I spent about £3,000 on it shortly after purchase but after that it was very reliable and I loved owning it. It went to a man who came all the way from Liverpool to West Berks with his young son who was so excited about them having a Coupe that letting go of it was not quite so difficult. In my signature photo my late husband is in the passenger seat, he had a lot of fun driving it, especially when he had a really long beard like ZZ Top; people used to think he was a rock star, or Lord Bath, as on rainy days or when driving at night to collect our son from something, the lacquer peel was invisible and it did look very Ferrari-like.

Mine was undriveable when I bought it, so had it directly transported to Luke at Italicar in Norwich where it sat for a couple of weeks before he had time to work on it.. Never used him before, he was top class, completely honest and trustworthy.

I knew of a garage in the 1970's that would sometimes fill rotton sills with soil before adding filler and over spraying!!!!

If you want to see some bad UK rust, check out Youtube for 'Yorkshire Car Restorations'... though they haven't tried a Fiat yet!
