I have started repairs on the wife's car from when she hit a deer last year. The damage was not too bad, but still a load of work. I decided that I would try to do the repairs and painting myself and see if I can get a decent finish. So far I have been working on lights, bits and bobs, new radiator, etc, and now the bumper.
The bumper was cracked in a few places with quite a large split. I spent quite a bit of time with staples and a soldering iron to make the repairs. It also has 28 years of stone chips and road rash. I managed to find bumper repair filler locally. Once repaired I tried spraying the primer filler with a very small spray gun. It didn't turn out great due to the paint thickness. I should have thinned it down way more. I was worried about the finish top coat too and thought the gun maybe just not suitable. I cannot use a full size spray gun as the compressor I have is just not big enough.
Today I tried the top part of the bumper with the black finish to see how good I could get it. I am very pleased with the result. Tomorrow I will try the bottom section in black and if it goes OK I will go next week to get the yellow base coat and lacquer.
Nice work Frazer. Just had my bumper done (and bonnet) and was left in no doubt how fiddly it was! The painter also pointed out how tricky yellow was when covering other colours as it (the one they used at any rate) is quite thin; I think mine got six coats followed by two of lacquer.
Thanks Simon Good to know. I will make sure I have plenty of yellow base coat. The bonnet should be easy compared to the bumper. Very fiddly, as you say.

You didn't use the same bonnet that the deer wore in its last moments??
No. too far gone I'm afraid. I had to pay well over the odds for a far from perfect 2nd hand one. Beggars cannot be choosers though. It will still be easier than the bumper!!!

Yes it looked a basket case in the photo. Maybe empty a couple of cans of waxoyl (with the extra-long straw) into the edges/crevices of your replacement...
That is one thing I don't have to worry about here. The car is rust free having spent very little time in the UK. Still plenty to worry about though!!!
