Updated HUs for aging cars is a problem, as im sure we all know. recently Pioneer released the SXT-C10PS. which, if i wasnt such a tech head, or maybe wanted to keep it somewhere near to stock, would have been bought already for my Coupe.

I've been on the look out for Raspberry Pi powered systems, and i seem to have found one that doesnt seem too far off the mark when it comes to what i want from a daily HU.
https://hudiy.eu/

Coupled with a super ultra wide 7inch ips touch screen it would seem ive found myself yet another project (like i needed any more)

super quick update on this,

bought the licence, bought a screen that is sized pretty nicely to fill the single DIN hole, got AndroidAuto working very easily on it and got the kids favourite friend AI to make me a splash screen logo

only about an hour of playing

Very interesting. Should end up a very smart package. The amount of current level tech available to hobbiests is amazing

What's it like in terms of start up time? Which Pi did you end up using?

Do you have any more details of the single DIN screen? Does it fit within the single DIN standard dimensions or do the edges of the screen overlap the "cage" that it fits into?

@szkom Pi4b 4gb, dark to UI loaded (not Android Auto) 50secs. Android auto loaded a further 15 secs

@DaveG strictly speaking its not Single DIN. its bigger... ill try to take a picture tomorrow so you can get an idea of how i eventually want it to look. ill be honest, i dont want this screen much smaller, i have fat fingers and it would be come super annoying to do anything with. Screen is a `Waveshare 17916`

Aha, so it's dimensions are: 207.78mm x 69.80mm

That's quite a bit more than the single DIN slot of 180mm x 50mm (nominally 7" x 2") with head units typically having a front fascia 188mm x 58mm, i.e. a 4mm "overhang" all round.

That screen is 28mm wider (14mm each side) and 20mm taller (10mm top and bottom) but without checking myself I'm not sure how well that will fit the Coupe, I hope it works for you!

I'm actually enquiring for a friend with a Maserati Gransport who bought a single DIN head unit with Android Auto but found that the fascia is slightly too tall at 62mm (but OK at 188mm wide).

I've got an old Kenwood KIV-BT 900 unit in my Coupes, top of the range 15 years ago when bluetooth and displaying album art was cutting edge laugh

Yeah, its as close as i could find for decent money you can get custom screens, but 500MOQ and god knows how much £££ from waveshare.

i am currently unaware of anything that even come close to actual single DIN size. the plan is to not loose too much functionality of the ashtray flap and ill attempt to make look like its "supposed to be there"

Plan is to get SDR Dongle to enable FM/DAB, feed a reverse signal in and get it to mute any audio that may be playing if reverse is selected.

id LOVE to get something similar to banacle's widget built into it too, not sure if its even possible with the VIS though. that maybe a whole new project for another day. ive thought about something ESP32/RPiPico/RPi0 based, if i can do it on a RPi0 itll work on any RPi.
id only need/want sensor monitoring, no real need for anything else.

That's pretty good, I've had a few Pis over the years and the start up time has been noticeable, but that's to a desktop or emulation usually.

Interesting you're using a waveshare product. I've also been trying some of their products, but in the sub 2 inch category and using a micro controller. Quite good stuff so far, although some interesting quirks.

Looking forward to seeing it in and finished

they do some super weird HDMI timings but i guess thats just because its a 1280x400 screen, ive never had to mess too much with that side of things. 1st impressions are pretty good, touch seems responsive enough, screen quality is good. theres a whole bunch of stuff i want to look into with it. but, we'll see.
