It has occurred to me that mine seems to kick in just as noticeably in second as in third, and below 3000 rpm. Does this mean I have a modded car?

When mine was standard, the kick in 2nd is still gonna hit you in the back. The boost may be restricted, but it's still a kick

You could always have a look for the EBV and check that it's all plugged in, and then have a look at the chip in the passenger footwell, if you want to be sure. Should take you half an hour to check both

Um, maybe I'm being pedantic, but surely if the kick is the same in 2nd and 3rd, this points to you getting less boost in 2nd ? Cars generally acccelerate slower in higher gears - blame the laws of physics

edit : your boost gauge will answer this for you - and not having one is not an excuse Essential bit of kit.
