Has anyone used or heard any reviews on the Toyo R888 tyres ?

Camskill have an offer on at the moment for 4 tyres at £298

Seems like a good price and I'm quite tempted especially with the track day in Nov coming up.

I've not used them - but know people that have. They are supposed to be an exceptional track tyre - but not for everyday running.

I quite fancy them myself Jimbo, but heard they can be downright dangerous in standing water, and I've seen an Exige crash with them on, and it was only light rain on the road and the car wasnt pushing very hard, so I'm not sure if its worth the chance to use as an everyday tyre, but the extra grip would be

Yeah I was worried about this too Joe, its going to be November so chances are its going to be wet, I did fancy some softer rubber but like you say, they aren't brilliant in the wet.
I guess it'll just be the good old Toyo T1R's getting shredded unless anyone knows of a good tyre that works in the wet ?

I don't know if they do Yokohama A048's or 46's in your size but they're standard fit on the evos and are incredible in the dry and passable in the wet. Have a read on MLR

Yes, I heard about them, £170 each do they last long on the road?

none of the tyres that I have used (R888 included) , came
close to these :

cheers.

nb : R888s are very good , but are v. noisy and may not be
a viable all weather tyre. They grip better than AD07s.

cheers.

Joe - they'd probably give me about 4k on the road in the evo - a lot more for your rears and less for your fronts

I've just put on my R888's this lunch!
They are 225/45-16, hardest compound. Have heard about bad grip in the wet too. I've driven a Coupe with similar Bridgestone's in light rain and that wasn't fun at all. Though they were a bit cold maybe.
Will get back to you with reviews!

Goodyear Eagle F1's are brilliant in both wet and dry. Never had the T1R's - so can't really compare the two I'm afraid.

I prefer the goodyear F1's to the T1R's, the goodyear appear to be a softer compound.

Toyo's look much cheaper though, especially if they are going to be mullered after a day on the track.

jimbo - look on blackcircles with code FCC1 - when I last got tyres there was only a few quid between the F1's and Toyos.

I beg to differ there... Sure, the F1 GSD3 are great in the wet, but on a hot sunny trackday - no! The just melt away very quickly and feel like overcooked spagetti.

Very uneconomical, hence my new Toyo's R888 (225/45-16). Still got the F1's as my 17" streetwheels though.

As a road tyre the Goodyear F1's GSD2's are very good, especially in the wet, however, their softer compound means that they are poor on a dry trackday.

They overheat very quickly and soon the tread becomes so soft it literally changes shape and then its just understeer,..understeer

Joe

Per,..so where's the reviews!!! ...get out there and do some driving!

May be worth leaving the track tyre decision until a few days before our trackday, see what the weather is like?

Easy on me now Joe!
I'll put the wheels on tonight and their first trackday will be on saturday, Kinnekulle here in Sweden. Will be interesting to compare to the last ones, Kumho V70...
Will get back to this thread!

The GSD3's i had on laster me 20k until they were literally bald and they gripped very very well in the warm dry weather around the local chicanes
I always run my tyres at the front at about 35psi though as they get hotter you will find they wash out a little more due to the higher pressure of the air inside the tyre. Always worth noting especially for track day fiends as the tyre pressure will be a lot higher than they are meant to be

What the hell, its only money, I'll get 2 new Toyo's anyway because my fronts are worn. I might buy an old set of wheels and fit track tyres to them, its not like I've spent much on the car this month:

PA FMIC
C&B Cams
Leda Rear Dampers
Koni Inserts for the FK Coilovers
Eibach Tender springs
HID lights

My god !

Thanks Suba, I'll check out Blackcircles

I have 18" Toyo Proxies T1-R that I bought in april, works great on the road.
Have used them 3 times on the track this season.
Lets put it this way: They are pretty worn...
You can really feeel how they start to melt down and you start sliding on the track when you have been running hard.
Spent some hours on the track in the wet (rain pouring down). That time the tires actually worked great! Impressive grip, didn't think I could drive that fast in the wet.
But of course, in the dry road tires shouldn't be on the track if you want to do some serious driving.
I will try to get some R-tires next season. Probably the Toyo R888. Have only heard good things about them.

I am guilty of , sometimes , deciding on tyres based on
thread design ... but ... I have to say that the 'busier'
the thread design looks , the poorer they perform as far
as dry grip is concerned.

if you track often , its even more telling.

cheers.

Looking at some of the pictures from last years L.O.T Silverstone in November, you can see just how much standing water there is Think I'll stick to road tyres.
