Thought I'd get this Q in prior to the Richbrook GB order coming through. What's the technique to removing the old one? Anything to look out for? any tools needed?

any of the previous GB participants want to help, that would be mucho appreciano!

Cut the thing off with a chain saw or a large axe, and don't listen to anyone who tells you that by putting a screw driver under the inside lip and tapping the screw driver head with a hammer actually works.

A cambelt change is easier

That's what I thought, I remember removing a knob on an old Golf a few years ago was as easy as beating Carol Vorderman at a maths test

Brute force, pull and turn at the same time.
Just watch you don't smack yourself in the face.
Either that or have your chinchilla chew it off for you!!

Do you need to loosen or undo anything or is it just a case of yanking it as hard as possible ( )

Had no problem with mine.
Used an open spanner placed under the knob and hit upwards with a hammer.

Dont know what all the fuss is with getting knobs off, unless the knob fitter got bored and glued some on

I tried the spanner technique but in the end had to resort to a hacksaw

Looks good now though

towel around the base (will catch the mess), a dremel with cutting disk, 30 seconds later new gear knob is on and job done. no point wasting time or effort any other way.

Did manage to remove mine with the spanner/hammer method, but it took 3-4 dozen hits because you cant get a good swing at it, and I felt worried about possible damage to the linkage beneath. I replaced mine with a chrome plated thing I bought off Ebay, looks ok, and a better shape than the original, but it gets boiling hot in summer, and ice cold in winter!

As an afterthought today whilst fitting some Ice, I gave my knob a good yank (as you do) and it's simply came off with no drama Easiest thing in the world! I noticed that 1. the lift-up platform had a chunk missing and 2. the inside of the knob was lubricated. So a previous owner had done the hard work
