I have seen a few posts recently asking for second hand brakes (Pads & Discs)

Brakes are consumable items. If yours are buggered fit new ones, your life could depend on it

As Mr T would say "Don't scrimp on them safety items fools"

What next used filters

I asked for second hand brakes to check if i had a problem with mines. I was going to change, then see what the result was like. Then if it was my brakes i would replace with new ones.

Ross my finger was not pointed in any particular direction matey

I was at a loss to reason why anyone would wish to fit old brakes, but you have given one

I am sure that if you had posted your syptoms in the technical sections, someone would have been able to help and saved you the effort of a needless brake change though.

2nd hand brakes are fine, providing they are sold as just that

my old brembos & discs have are finding their way to another owners hands, however, I have took the liberty of skimming the discs & bead blasting the rust off them. I am supplying the old pads ( almost about 80% pad on them ) but am also providing a new set of pagid blues.

It all boils down to how much you want to skimp

personally, I'd examine them carefully, after all, they are there to save you from

As Taz said. Its down to knowing what you are looking at. I've bought and fitted secondhand pads before. A new set of Pagid Blues is £180 ish, that means a set with a few miles on them is still worth buying say for anything less half price.

Ponder this. If you sell your car you are supplying secondhand brakes anyway in a roundabout way. What exactly changes if you remove them from the car.?

Unfortunately I would doubt that many people know what they are looking for on second hand pads / discs.

I fully understand the point of view that if brakes were fine on one car they should be fine on another. I can, to some extent, agree that if the person fitting them has an understanding of potential brake problems and what they should be looking for then all should be fine.

However, the only reason for using second hand bits (Other than for testing as mentioned above) is to save money. I would always argue that to use second hand safety items is a false economy. Standard discs and pads are not prohibitively expensive and are fine for every day driving. The reason for fitting performance brakes would be because one wishes to push the car closer to its limits. Surely if you are going to place greater trust into such components, the cost should play an even less significant part of your decision making process.
