a manual boost gauge and and electronic? I'm looking at a Greddy electronic one (Model 16001002). I'm under the impression that electronic is better but how do they work?

Thanks Chris. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I have the same Greddy electronic gauge <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

The electronic gauges use a pressure sensor the same as the electronic boost controllers, this makes them very sensitive to changes in pressure and very accurate. The signal from the sensor is sent via wires to the boost gauge.

A manual or mechanical gauge uses a copper or brass coil on the inside of the gauge that is wound like a spring, as the boost or vaccuum acts on the coil it will expand or contract. This is converted into a rotary motion for the needle on the gauge.

Both are similar in action but the electronic gauge is smoother and as said above more accurate.
A mechanical boost gauge is plenty good enough, I bough the electronic one because it was just as cheap on ebay.

Generally the electronic ones as the sensor is usually in the engine bay and you just need to run wires through to the cabin. Mechanical ones usually require a tube from the engine bay which is slightly more difficult to route (no kinks and thicker).

However I have an electric one with a separate sensor in a module but that module in on the cabin side!
