I have read on here that having a de-cat will ware out the original turbo quicker. Is this true?
I have also read that people have run a de-cat with a standard turbo for a while with no complains and have not noticed the seals waring e.g. blue smoke out the back.
I have also read that the original turbo unit has a strange mechanism that opens slightly when there is no load on the turbo e.g. when its idling.
Currently, I have been looking into upgrading my turbo. Was looking into a Gt28rsr unit from Barbz. My car still has stock suspension and brakes. So before i upgrade my turbo i'm gonna get coilovers and upgrade the brakes.
I'm keen to get a custom exhaust (thinking a very loud one de-catted with only a back box) but am curious if it will ware my turbo quicker??
Is having a free flowing exhaust with vey little back pressure harmful to my turbo or will it simply ware my turbo seals quicker??
If i continue to run with my car with blue smoke when it idles for a while is this harmful or does it simply look crap??
If having a free flowing de-catted exhaust is harmful just to the turbo seals is there a way of upgraging the seals so that i can combat all the blue smoke?
Cheers

It's not really the seals waring out, but it can look like they are. It's just that there is less backpressure as the exhaust gasses flow more freely for the standard turbo. It needs the backpressure to keep the seals "tight" so with this reduced they can leak. I had the seals replaced on my turbo but after about 20K miles they are starting to leak again, but no complaints until then and I'm not worried about it. If you want a smokeless Coop get a different turbo.

No - save it for when you upgrade the turbo.

I noticed the difference when i had mine decatted. seemed to spool up easier and also had a nice improvement on the sound from the exhaust as well, gave it more of an angry growl

If you have a newish hybrid that smokes with a de-cat, will fitting the cat back stop the smoking or just ware the cat out quickly?
