my ebv needs replacing, i've been told to get a prv but i think i would rather relpace with a new ebv (hassle of setting the right boost on the prv)
i've got a gteck 1 chip which gives me 1.2 bar anyway, will a new ebv work ok with the chip?

As far as I am aware, a new EBV will work fine. I think that if you speak to Graham (who developed the chip) you will find that these chips can cause spiking in your boost levels through the gears.

Easy fix.....fit a PRV!

My advice - For what they cost, fit the PRV and simply clean your existing EBV.

Guides for both fitting PRV's and cleaning the EBV can be found on here.

This is of course assuming that your existing EBV still works - albeit not very well. If you need to change this too though, give carlt a shout, I'm sure he can fix you up with one.

Depends on whether or not your existing one is shot.

You still need to have the EBV connected when running your PRV, otherwise the ECU wouldn't like it much.

This may help - clicky

you'll know about it if your EBV has given up as mine recently has! Stopped giving good boost and it isnt that easy to clean it and get it running back upto a decent standard! Speak to Carlt otherwise fiat'll charge you £125 for the privalidge of a new one!!!

It depends upon how much tuning you plan on doing really Joel. If you think you'll stop here, I would get a PRV. At £25(ish) you can't go wrong with it, and IMO the added benefits of an EBC are not worth the extra cash.

If you think you may go further down the tuning route then an EBC is definitely worth considering.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if you are going to fit a PRV or separate electronic controller, a new Fiat EBV will be a waste of money. Once you fit another boost controller, you effectively disconnect the standard EBV from the boost circuit, so it's not really a problem if it's sticking!

you will just leave the ebv in place and use the piping off of it.

I didnt think you got 1.2 bar with just the chip? I thought you had to have the PRV fitted to turn it up to that?
As the chip just makes sure the cars fuelled enogh for this level of boost. Yes?

EBC solenoid goes in place of the EBV using the hoses that go into the bottom of it. You either leave the tube on the top of the EBV connected to it, or take it off and plug the end - otherwise you'll trigger an error code, and your injector light will come on. Leave the electrical connector connected to the EBV.

Presumably you have a boost gauge to help you set up the boost with a PRV? Make sure you use 4th or 5th gear when getting a reading for setting the boost.

Are you aware that with the EBV your ECU can still control the boost level, which means it can reduce the boost if it detects a problem. With any external method of controlling the boost this safety feature is lost.

joel. im using just the ebv without a prv installed. works fine. I havebt even got a boost gauge but i will get one once the clutch has been replaced. At the mo i cant use full boost in the higher gears anyway as the clutch starts slippin. (all started when i got the chip )

thanks for the advice everyone, it's a slippery slope after buying a chip.

borely the chip does increase the boost to 1.2 bar

There you go joel - cheap & safe option.

Wasn't sure myself if a faulty EBV would cause probs with the PRV, but looks like it is only the electrical supply that matters for the ECU.

25 quid for a nice smooth acceleration curve now , and if you mod further later you can hook yourself up with a nice new EBC then.

to set the prv i just turn it one way slightly, then go for a run, stick it in fourth, boot it (from what revs?) watch the boost gauge & if i've got it right it should hold 1.2 bar upto what revs?

Floor it from 2,500 to about 4,000 - set it according to the peak boost level. If you get a tiny spike over 1.2 when you come on boost then dont worry about it.

On the standard turbo you should hold 1.2 bar until about 5,500 rev, at this point the boost will tail off towards the redline.
