hey guys, when i bought my coupe my aim was to get to 350 bhp. Now that im not far off that i want to try get to 400bhp my car hasnt been mapped yet and its putting out 336bhp at 1.2 bar was wondering what else you would think i need to get my car upto 400bhp. I would have thought forge pistons, forge rods, aquamist and 1.5 bar should take me pretty close? or would i be wrong?

cheers for any help

That turbo you have in your signature won't support 400 bhp, Barbs could 'only' manage 386bhp out of that unit

Are u sure u want 400 BHP? 350 BHP = nice clutch, standard internals, standard injectors; going over this = paddle clutch; forged internals etc...

I just got my car back friday, I think the biggest problem is the paddle clutch...Havent experienced any problems like Nigel, mostly because I dont run Unichip

But you would need at least forged pistons, and a new turbo... Most likely new clutch, bigger injectors
of course a remap also

hmmm so not a good idea according to most i supose what i would need is another car too as the coupe probably wouldnt be that drivable. might just get my car mapped to 1.4 bar see what it puts out and leave it at that. cheers for the thought tho anyway guys.

Try and get the most out of your .86. You could probably get 380bhp-ish tops so it's not too far off 400bhp. Remember bigger turbo will mean more lag, no matter what anyone says. The best compromise on a 2 litre is the GT28RS as regards to what is suited to the 3-7k powerband so I say just max your setup and be happy with what you get.

Trust me - 400bhp really isn't that mich quicker than 300 and the car is far less pleasant to drive.

I reckon on a GT28RS and standard injectors, you can get 330 - 350 with some clever mapping. You'll also get away with a decent everyday clutch

Don't do it unless you can put up with a compromised car.

I regret doing mine, although I'm almost sorted now - its taken four months and a lot of time and money to just get it running properly.

Have a chat with Flea about trying to put 400bhp down on the road, especially in the wet !
Flea's car is probably the most sorted 400bhp coupe around at the moment but he struggles like hell to get the power down, I think he was running with just base boost on the track day.

Nick,..as Nigel,..says there are compromises when you try and get to that magical 400bhp barrier.

tbh if you can live with the increased spool up time, then 400bhp+ is possible, but not with the turbo you ar using. The main other issue now that mapping seems to be working is the nature and driveability of a clutch solution for 330-350 lb/ft+

I simply can't imagine what its like with 400bhp in a coupe. I'll have to try someones (if they'll let me <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />)

This morning I was getting wheel spin in 3rd (slightly wet road) at only 1 bar.

It depends on how you get 400BHP though doesn't it?. I have been in Markus' car which is only 5% shy of 400BHP and he has no real lag to speak of - certainly less laggy than a std 16VT.

And if you have a 2.4 it is a lot more pleasant to drive than a standard car in every way as you have bucket loads of torque everywhere including off boost. If I just wanted 400BHP I could put a smaller turbo on my motor that would give me better than stock spoolup and 400BHP.

I've done over 30,000 miles at over 400BHP and it isn't hard to put the power down if you set up your car right. I get no wheelspin in any gear in the dry. In the wet again it is down to setup - Flea hasn't got TC and at some point you have to face the fact that TC is the way to go in the wet even on a stock car to make better progress.

This goes back to the argument that you cannopt put down more than 250BHP on a FWD car which is a load of B*****ks in my opinion.

Coupes are helped with traction by the weight.

Ross the less weight the better...as far as I know, the Coupe is rather heavy.

Why less weight? If there is no weight over the front end it will rise causing loss of traction no?

Less weight = better acceleration - its physics

However, for ANY given weight, its best to have as much of it as possible over the driven wheels, as it helps traction.

The Coupe isn't particularly light, but with a 2/3 front-biased weight distribution, its pretty good off the mark for its overall weight.

To be honest that was the point i was trying to make. That most of the weight is over the front wheels.

John,.. can you remind us which clutch you are running? Having tried the Helix paddle, it is still a fair bit off user-friendliness,.. the Helix organic sounds like a better solution?

Yep I agree 100% John, I was talking to Flea about TC, it will at least allow you to put down as much power as the front wheel can phyiscally cope with.
I'm sure your 2.4 will have more torque off boost so your power delivery would be more progressive I would imagine ?

I was using an extremely uprated Helix coverplate and a Alcon paddle, but above 400BHP it starts to slip sometimes so I am moving to the Helix twin-plate.
I did use a Helix organic for a long time but I shredded the clutch material in the end. It can't take 400BHP for that long.

It is more progressive but that's a property of larger turbos as much as anything. If I put a smaller turbo on - e.g. a GT3060R then it would be agressive (something like 400lbs/ft at 2800rpm) but would tail off more like the standard unit does. The 2.4 moves the whole power curve of turbos down the rev range by 1000-1200rpm which is why I make rougly the same power as Flea but a bucket load of extra torque (if you think about the maths of the torque to BHP relationship it makes sense) and my peak power is at just 5700-6000rpm or thereabouts whereas his is at 7000+rpm
