Well, for the second time now (2 different coops), my bonnet catch has failed, sendiny my bonnet through my windscreen on a motorway! There is no apparent damage to the catch so can only assume that the slam panel has just gradually worn away.
You have been warned!

Or your cable is set wrong holding it slightly open.

Nothing to do with the fly catch, they wont hold anything down at speed.

Bonnet obviously knackered, windscreen smashed lights knackered and two 'boob marks' in the roof where they hit! Fortunately the opening for the windscreen doesnt seem to have been deformed though.

Bad luck mate, there has been a couple on here since I have been on this forum that have had the same thing happen. \:\(

A thought...

Always let the bonnet drop closed from around 8" rather than pushing it closed, then tug upwars to make sure it is engaged.

I find it funny seeing people press their bonnet closed and the shallow dents it makes where their hands were pressing down

This can also contribute to a bonnet that isn't closed properly.

Not saying you did this though! \:\)

That is either incredible bad luck or there is a common factor that means you are particularly at risk. It is not something I recall having come across on here regularly. On the few times I can recall, there always seemed to be a sensible explanation.

Make sure the bonnet catch is properly greased ,that seems to be the main cause i see on cars which have problems with the bonnet not securing and BMW`s are the worst for this i`ve found. I usually just get them in for MOT`s as they go to the main dealers to get serviced and i don`t think they have been touched in the three years before i see them .

I had to have a new bonnet and in spite of the generally good work at Scottsdale [recommended by Direct Line] the only detail left unrefined was the bonnet catch. Seems to be a critical adjustment and after not being able to open it mine is now fine after getting used to the lack of reassuring clunk when pulling the lever.

Seems this is not confined to our breed - Watchdog [beeb1] tonight revealed that the Renault Clio series 2 has had over 1000 incidents reported of bonnets flying open while on the move; worse, Renault doesn't appear to be taking very seriously.

It could actually be the position of the bonnet. Mines was incorectly positioned and didnt pop up properlly.

Did you have a replacement? If so was there a shunt which misaligned the hinges or was it just cosmetic? Where do you get your spares?
Er sorry ,not meant to be the Spanish inquisition.

what was the conclusion for this happening did any one work out? the only reason i ask is that mine has popped up twice now in the last week while driving at motorway speeds but luckily the catch had caught it but its only a matter of time before my luck runs out.

Any info much appreciated

Geoff

There's two different size strikers for the coupe.

Only time ive ever seen this happen the bonnet has the wrong striker for the catch. If the car has had a bonnet bolted on "in colour" then people never check or change the striker, or even adjust it. Thats where the problem is.

Most people are in denial there coupe's may have had a bonnet replaced. Strange fiat have run out of them.

Is it worth having a securing line to stop bonnet lifting more than 6 inches, but can be un hooped to open bonnet... I'm getting paranoid,,,
