Well seems rather odd, but i recently sold a very very nice coupe with over 100k on here, and all the loverly lot you are recommended it to three new people in particular who were looking at the time, they all snubbed it for lower mileage cars, and that was the exact reason said.

Strange, ive sold two of those three people an engine last week and the 3rd has its engine coming out now.

So much for higher milers are more of a problem, personally i'd disagree.

Seems a little spooky eh?

I think you are probably right there Carl, I bought a low mileage car before my coupe, 10 years old, 56000 miles, and it was a complete dog after about 2 months.

I just dont think cars are designed to be sitting round all the time!

lol well proven like ive said to others in work, high milers either mean the engine is good or the engine has already been replaced \:D

i think half the time mileage is irrelevent its more down to how the car has been treated than how many miles its covered but in general the older an engine/car gets the more likely you are to have problems with it,just a case of wear and tear \:\)

I brought my 98 20vt 18 months ago with 37k on it. The ONLY problem I've had was the fuel cut off £30 and the only time I've had to top up the oil was when the cam cover gasket split.
I did pay top dollar at the time but I could see that it was a well loved coupé. I think the problem with coupé are that it is all to easy to see a coupé through rose tinted glasses.

Carl hasn't made a point he's made an observation. IMO ;\)
I agree with both you and beast. Any engine that comes off the forecourt recommending that you check the oil levels regularly because it uses 1 litter of oil a month isn't a strong engine but as you say Ross it the owners responsibility to check it.

Well check the oil consumption for other turbo cars and you'll find the coupe aint that much more in relative terms.

Only had a 200sx and a 300zx turbos and they didn't use a drop and IIRC the hand book didn't say anything about oil consumption, not sure how other turbos fare though.

I'm with Ross on this one, Oil consumption is high by n/a terms but ALL turbos use more than their fair share of oil.

Mine was on 92k, with 3 bar on load and 2.5 to 2.75 at idle.

Im not sure why you feel the need to post complete and utter sh*t on every thread on this forum Beast but its becoming a real bore
Your Jimmy Cranky encyclopedia of knowlege that you seem to get your facts from should be placed back under your bed and left well alone !

I looked at a few so call mint low mileage LE's before buying mine but a car that does 2 mile journeys every day will never get chance to warm up. It will have spent half its life running rich on cold start so it will probably have bore washed cylinders and poor condition oil.

My fist Coupe had done 88,000 miles by the time I bought it at 3 years old. I added another 40,000 to that in the following two years, by which time it was still on its original clutch, oil pressure was still above 2 bar at hot idle. The turbo had been replaced at 110,000 miles, but only because the wastegate failed. It was on its second set of front wishbones and its second exhaust.

I've always said that on a car of more than half a dozen years old, the mileage is utterly irrelevant - its how its done the miles that counts.

I would respectfully suggest that my 1998 car, at 155,000 miles is a much better buy than a 1999 Coupe with a third of the mileage.

Very very true.

Just remembered another, had a customer with a 16v, engine started smoking so he asked for a replacement. I had a loverly porto 20v with 125k on the clock, he said yes, we did all the jobs, fitted leathers, belts, clutch, cooler and pipes, and 3 days before collection he pulled out, said car was high mileage.

So a week went by and he called, bought a 20vt in yellow on a P-reg with 36k on the clock, said this is the car, and the same price as your high mileage one, sniggered.

Well so did i when he almost broke down driving it home.

On getting his LOW MILEAGE bargain which was obviously far better than mine he found it needed the following:

Cambelt, never done
Clutch slips under boost and 3rd gear notches
ABS pump leaks
OSF Brembo leaks
Exhaust blowing ( i warned him, 2 weeks later it torched the bumper
One wheel bearing
Pads and disks alround
Not serviced for 3 years, and oil like tar, no wonder it had such strong pressure
Oil cooler pipes burst after 3 weeks
NSF window motor didnt work
OSF strut leaking

The list just went on and on, i didnt do any of the work, he couldnt understand why it was all dearer than a 16v, he thought i was jelous he had bought from someone else, a specialist in wales he said!

So the car cost 3.5k and last time we spoke he was upto 2.5k in repairs in 5 months.

Me, well the porto one, the HIGH MILEAGE one, has just had a screen washer pump fitted, 10k miles on and the only fault!

Yep - have to agree it's how the miles are done that counts, I always assume 'low-mileage' cars have been clocked anyway - it's easy way of making a fast buck.

Reminds me of a friend who bought a Subaru Impreza 555 from a Subaru dealer, full history - 40K miles.

After 2 months the police confiscated it, as it had been clocked. The dealer was totally un-aware.

And there is a point, you know which engine has been described as weak? rotary engines, and this is backed up by the fact they need rebuilt all the time.

The newer ones are much better but from what ive worked out they would be better suited to LPG and produce less rotor tip wear as well but ive yet to come across anyone who has converted one to LPG \:\(

Weak engine? That's a ridiculously sweeping statement. What a pity when looking at used cars that all the previous owners of the car can't be inspected at the same time. The fact is that certain types of cars attract certain types of drivers. Another fact is that just because a car is capable of high speeds and fast performance some people think it has to be thrashed to within an inch of it's life every time they get behind the wheel. That's how engines get popped before their time - it's all to do with the driver.

Yep! Looking at it you'd never buy my dads scooby, Y reg, 65k, has ECUTEK remap and some gay exhuast (H&S).

Yet its 1 owner from new, he is 53 and drives like a total granny! His tyres last 25k!

Absolutely - and personally, if I didn't know who the previous owner(s) were of a car, I would go for low mileage every time as I'd rather buy something that has potentially been thrashed for 50k miles than 100k miles but looks 'better'....
