Another fact is that just because a car is capable of high speeds and fast performance some people think it has to be thrashed to within an inch of it's life every time they get behind the wheel. That's how engines get popped before their time - it's all to do with the driver. Absolutely - and personally, if I didn't know who the previous owner(s) were of a car, I would go for low mileage every time as I'd rather buy something that has potentially been thrashed for 50k miles than 100k miles but looks 'better'.... Dont think a coupe would make it to 100k being thrashed all the time!! Ross

Yep! Looking at it you'd never buy my dads scooby, Y reg, 65k, has ECUTEK remap and some gay exhuast (H&S).
Yet its 1 owner from new, he is 53 and drives like a total granny! His tyres last 25k! Like Father like son, now I know where you get it from!

My opinion, for what it’s worth, is that you can’t make sweeping generalisations about anything in life. You must always judge each case; or in this case, car, on it’s individual merits.
However, I think that if a car has only had a couple of previous owners, (enthusiasts, hopefully, who have looked after it), & has done lower than average (genuine) miles, then it is likely that it might just be a better buy than a car that has done a lot more miles, & has had many more previous owners, about whom you know nothing.
After all, it’s about how well the car has been looked after; & that’s not always an easy thing to determine. There’s always a risk when you buy a 2nd hand car.

Well I went to see a low mileage LE (something like 42k) on the clock and two owners. OMG, the body was bad. From a short distance it looked like a new car, on closer inspection very poor paintwork all over, badly filled dents and general paint build-up of thick paint where the body kit meets the body. Closer inspection and the o/s rear panel where the lights are was found to be made from fibreglass. It had a heafty shunt. Rear arches were rusty, sanded down and painted over too. The interior was genuine and showed the mileage of the car with hardly any wear although there were some nasty scratches in the trim. Bloke was asking for a concourse car's money, which pi**ed me off as it was a long journey for me to view. I haven't seen it for sale on here after I told him his car was part fibreglass. Mileage means nothing IMO - To a point.

I would echo Nigels comments, my coop has done 111K on original clutch and turbo. Uses around 1L of oil per 1000 miles, little bit of smoke on startup but not once warmed. It is not thrashed though I do use the performance. I have replaced all the suspension, new discs all round twice and coming up for a third new set of discs, on second exhaust. replaced radiator, oil cooler and pipes but no engine issues at all, the only time I got worried it was only a poorly connected Bosch connector for the AFM.
Wouldn`t call that a weak engine and yes I change the oil every 6K and check it every week and always before and after a long run.
I bought the car on 60K at a good price with a full history and immediately spent 2k to get all the neccessary work done, belts, tensioners, manifold and some of whats listed above to make sure the car was fully fit. The price I paid reflected the work that needed to be done and I was far happier in the knowledge it had been done, not just told it had by a third party.
Roll on the next few years of ownership.
I do wonder how long the turbo will last. The clutch is being replaced in a couple of months, no slippage just getting heavy.

I bought many a high mile car that was better than so called low mileage examples. As for weak engines - well only engine I managed to blow was a skyline engine and that was meant to be strong and had 40k on clock

thats because the 20vt is a known weak engine, look at the amount of people who have had failures on them, and i have even had one coupe tuner say to me that they are a weak engine Im not sure why you feel the need to post complete and utter sh*t on every thread on this forum Beast but its becoming a real bore Your Jimmy Cranky encyclopedia of knowlege that you seem to get your facts from should be placed back under your bed and left well alone ! hahahahaha really laughing at that.as i stated in my post even a fairly well known tuner agrees that the coupe has a weak engine and look at the amount of failiures that people have had with 20vt engine's,as a percentage its higher than most other cars that could be mentioned. on the subject of posting complete and utter s**t and it becoming a bore just dont read what i post if you dont liek it,simple really

And what's the percentage of "most other cars that could be mentioned". Just so we can compare.

but falire does seem to mainly come along with turning.left pretty much standard with decent maintenace can be a lasting engine Thats the key tuning - simple as - tuning to any extent will take something in the engine closer to a tolerance that is built into its engineering. Thus you have a higher risk of failure, look at any forum be it scoobs, skylines, RX8s or anything and find many owners doing many miles on standard cars. Tuned cars on the other hand are a matter of finding the weakest link first. In the case of my skyline it was the turbo letting go and starving bottom end of engine. From what I see Fiat engines suffer the same as any other turbo car - no worse no better...IMHO

Mileage means nothing IMO - To a point. I went to see a Plus just like this - 32k miles but quite possibly THE worst re-spray I've ever seen, runs on the wings & bumpers, over-spray all over the engine bay & under the headlight, erm, black bits you see from under the bonnet when it's open, etc, etc! The guy wouldn't let me drive it, said it had had its cambelt done but he had no receipts, point-blankly refused to agree it'd been re-sprayed and laughed when I said his asking price of £6,200 was a bit OTT...and in any case he had "loads" of people coming to look at it that weekend. On the Sunday evening he rang and offered it to me for £4,000. I still said "no".
She's GONE!

Ross internet warrior?dont quite understand that, people were commenting that it mileage doesnt always have an indication on car reliability ect and i commented from experience(i had an engine failure) and from being on the forum for about 5 years(therefore i have seen plenty of engine failure threads) that the coupe seems to have a weak engine.this was backed up when i talked to a coupe tuner about the coupe engine,im giving my oppinion which is what this forum is about,i aint saying it to cause a reaction as demostrated by jimbo who didnt agree with my comments-get a life its a discussion forum and i was discussing my views based on my experiences. i may not have a coupe now but i did have one for about 2 years and in that time i did quite alot of things with my coupe, repair wise/tuning wise/maintainence wise so i do have some idea what im commenting on. like i say if someone dont like my comments, theres an ignore user facility on the forum i suggest you use it rather than winging anymore actually im getting an imminent ban because i answer mods back anyway so you may not have to ignore me anyway
