Can you not just get the best priced annual policy and then either cancel it after 6 months (I don't think you lose that much doing this) or transfer to the coupe replacement, assuming you get another car?

Most polices are weighted greatly in the favour of the agent when cancelling ie could pay 1k and after 6 months be offered 200-400 back.

Not if you are paying via monthly direct debit then cancel - You only pay for the months you have used in my experience.

You're being given bad advice here.
If you take out a one year policy and cancel after 6 months there is every chance you will get nothing back at all. Insurance documents contain a schedule showing how much of the premium will be refunded if you cancel after x length of time and it goes down very rapidly indeed.
It's an even worse idea to cancel a direct debit, because that will have a negative effect on your credit rating.
When you pay monthly by direct debit you are not paying month-by-month for your insurance, rather the insurance broker is lending you the money to pay the whole year's premium up front and you are repaying them one month at a time.
If you cancel your direct debit, even if you cancel your policy at the same time, the lender is still entitled to come after you for the difference between how much you've paid and how much you owe ... and they will.
Very few companies offer 6 month policies so you might be best off looking at a 10 month policy from Elephant, or similar.
Alternatively you could always trandfer your policy to your next car.
Dear monos, a secret truth.

Not bad advice from me - just my experience!
I had a policy last year with "More Than" for a third car that I had - They split the premium up over 12 months and added a percentage (8%, I think) and took payments via direct debit. When I sold the car after a few months I called to cancel the policy, they confirmed details and asked me to return the certificate. I asked if I was due any additional amount - No, in fact I received a small amount back which accounted for part of the month that I had cancelled in!
I certainly would not cancel a direct debit without informing the receiving organisation!
All companies and policies will be different - Check details to make sure you are getting the best deal for yourself.

How about taking out a policy and then canceling after 4 weeks? Could do that a couple of times and not cost much more than admin fees? Other option is just phone the brokers and tell them what you are looking for. ie a 6 month policy
