Yes, I know this belongs in 'insurance', but I was so impressed I thought you would all want to hear this:

To renew my coupe insurance I have been quoted £540 fully comp. Even 3rd party F and Theft would have been £320 (I wouldn't do that, I'm just illustrating). Anyway - a few days ago I bought myself a little Cinquecento Sporting to take care of the 10 miles a day commuting (sitting in a jam) and to do little trips to the dump or to tennis (potholed carpark). The little thing only cost £700 and does about 40 mpg even in town. I figured the amount of wear and tear I would save on my coupe, combined with the petrol savings and the fact the coupe will now only be used for longer runs and be even more cost-efficient as a result - all of that would more than pay for the low tax and insurance on the Cinquecento. Anyway, by putting the insurance in my wife's name, the the Cinqy only cost £130 a year 3rd party via Provident even though I didn't apply any no claims discount to it. I thought that was good.

Anyway, the plot thickens. My wife (who owns a n/a coupe) was so impressed that now she has a Cinqucento sporting too!!! (4 cars - yes I know we are mad - and both the Cinqos are yellow like her n/a!). This got me thinking. I decided to do a quote on a multicar policy via Admiral. These were the costs when insuring the 4 cars separately:

My turbo - £540 comp
Wife's n/a - £450 comp
Both cinqos - £130 each 3rd party

TOTAL = £1250 p.a \:o

Here is the cost of insuring the cars as a multicar policy:

My turbo - £266 fully comp \:D \:D \:D
Wife's n/a - £284 fully comp (dunno why more than mine)
Both cinqos - £109 each 3rd party F and Th

TOTAL = £768 p.a \:\) (i.e. £220 less than insuring the 2 coupes would have been separately alone).
NOTE: All 4 cars are insured at 5000 miles each p.a. which is plenty in all 4 cases.

Obviously you will all have different details to me, but the point is that depending on your mileage/commuting distance, etc. it is well worth considering buying yourself a little group 1 or 2 car - far from being a luxury it can actually make owning a coupe MORE affordable. My wife's sporting was only £400 and is a beauty. I'm 6'4" and not only can I drive it comfortably, I can sit easily in the back when she does! They are great fun to chuck around too and both cars have new head gaskets and brakes - mine is also lowered, has a stainless, Abarth body kit and big alloys as well (I couldn't resist)

An added extra bonus is that after spending a couple of days in a cinquecento, the coupe looks and drives like the starship enterprise - the chances of me feeling like I need to spend money on styling and mods now are nil - I will never take it for granted again.

Sorry about the long post, but for some of you this could be worth thinking about.

Yeah I tried Admiral for my Carina and my GTI but they were very expensive, so I got a separate classic policy on the pug. I am now paying less on two cars than I was on the 20VT despite writing off the coop in December.

I've been thinking about trying one of these policies. Now I have the coop, the MX5 and her punto. In total its around £1400 at the mo i think so might a be a small saving in there. Thx for sharing that \:\)

May be worth trying Direct Line also.
We have just bought our first Coupe and I was originally quoted £1600 fully comp, as it is my first car and I don't have any no claims.
My other half had our house insurance and his car with directline so we had quotes for multi car with them.

We had a discount for having home insurance with them, multi car discount, and partner discount (you have to live together for this).
My Coupe now costs me less than £500 a year (it's the 20v Turbo kind), and his primera costs us £320 per year.

May be worth checking all this out if your other halves have cars too.

I presume the downside of a multi-car policy is that if you have a prang you lose your no claims (unless protected) on all cars, rather than just one?

Yes - although it is protected on all of them in our case.

I can add to this! I have multi car insurance with Greenlighht, (is not the same as the above) they mirror my no claims on the coupe for the second car! I have six years no claims on the coupe and have just crashed the bravo. I have lost the mirror and will not get it back again! Will have to give the above mentioned a ring me thinks!

I must say that Direct Line are excellent. I am 21 and drive a '06 2.0 TDI Golf (Group 13) and a 20V NA Coupe (Group 17) with 4 years NCB and only pay a total of £530 to cover both cars (the coupe is limited to 15,000 miles a year though).

I think their quote is really good value for money given my age, and when many insurers want more than that on the Golf alone.

Lol, it's a bit like that. I live in the middle of nowhere in N Wales.

I've plumped for the Group 1 car - make it easier on the coupe option!

I was very tempted to get a cinqey but the head ruled the heart and I've got a Nissan Micra 1.0 L for £595. It's a fridge on wheels, but I decided to go for the indestructable Nissan build quality.

It all means I can fluff up the coupe a bit and save it for weekends. As mentioned above it may even save money - V power alone was costing me £1500 a year.

Thanks thats really helpful. I'm 22 and paying just over £400 a year for a 1.3 fiesta (fully comp with 3 years ncb). I'm looking into getting a 16vt with a friend to do the student gumball rally, but funds permitting i'll buy his half after \:\)

I've been getting quotes in the region of £800 fully comp for the coupe but hopfully i can get a quote somewhere near matt_27 (wishfull thinking) which will enable me to keep the fiesta as a run around and the coupe for fun/longer drives.

To be honest in university cities you will struggle on a multi-car insurance policy. I know when I was at uni in Liverpool the insurance on the Golf alone was well over £900 and the Coupe was considered uninsurable, despite ironically the car probably being more secure as it was kept in a locked car park as opposed to a driveway.
