Three things happened to me at the runway bash yesterday

1) Car ran stupidly weak after an ECU reset - almost no fuel when on open-loop running - in for a remap on Saturday

2) Windscreen surround kept coming off over 140mph - currently held on with duct tape

3) one noisy tappet got even noisier at hot tickover

I've just had the prices for 2) and 3)

Winscreen surround - long bit of shaped rubber - £85 +VAT

Hydraulic tappet - precision piece of engineering - less than a tenner

Who makes this lot up?

Seems to be the same in most dealerships.

Windscreen surround likely to be changed more often with a new windscreen than a tappet that may need changing once in a blue moon, so Fiat make more money?

Although windscreen surround cheaper than I thought, I must order myself one

lol they tried charging me £185 for an EBV essentially a spring, some minor electronics surrounded by plastic, they need ti get theyre heads sorted methinks

Ignoring the mythology of the 'ECU reset'... before you map, investigate just *why* the open fuelling is incorrect. If the map has changed, then the entire central part of your ECU is at risk (and perhaps has not been properly programmed (in an electronic sense, rather than the intended values)); if not, what's changed in the fueling? Extra air? Pressure changed on the fuel rail? Leak somewhere?

Have to inject that, although the ecu reset may be a myth, something definately changes when a reset is done. My question to Nigel is...

Why did you feel the need to reset and how do you know that the fuelling was out?

Over a period of several weeks, the throttle response goes "fluffy", especially coming off tickover

An ECU reset normally makes it go rich for a day or so until it learns the new parameters, then its fine for another couple of months

yesterday, at 155mph, I glanced at the AFR meter and noticed only seven LEDs lit (normally eight or nine)

This led me to believe it was running a bit lean, so I decided for safety to reset the ECU and then do a few gentle runs to let it re-learn.

However, it looks like the extra fuel is killing the spark on the dodgy plug, so it was never going to run right.

pretty difficult to check the fueling on a single cylinder, so I'm just going to have to have the injector checked and also the ignition timing.

the plugs have been in there a long time though - getting on for 30,000 miles

You really need to get a wideband lambda. Then you know exactly what your going at all times. Any decent times etc?

Not wanting to take this off topic too much, but is there a reason why your map seems to go 'off' after a couple of weeks? Does Flea have this sort of problem too, as in is it a side effect of the larger injectors, or is it due to the specific way your car was mapped?

I find when dealing with fiat it's always the nuts and bolts and stuff like that that's a killer for prices. For my suspension rebuild last year I changed them all and it was some sort of ridiculous figure that I dont even care to repeat.

So.... could you not just arrange for a subtle stone chip to turn into a crack, pay the insurance £50 excess and receive a new windscreen and surround.

Just a thought ofcourse...
