One year with the engine out and the battery disconnected on my car: no red key, still started first time. Locksmith can clone spare keys from the blue one, so I'd have to say, totally unimportant! Carlt does full sets of ecu/locks/keys for around £220 iirc

At the end of the day not very. Lots of people have had all sorts of work done on the coops and never needed it. If you want one for the sake of having a "complete car" to sell on later (and quite a few people mistakenly insist on them) then CarlT has full sets of locks/ECU/keys for a reasonable cost.

The key bit in the buyers could do with tweaking a bit though as reading that you'd that the red was important and could cost a grand to fix if it was missing.

i've needed mine once, left the stereo on whilst filling up with petrol and when i started up the key symbol came up and car ran like a bag of brown stuff. put red key in and started up, everything back to normal. if you don't have the red key i suppose the old code card and pushing the throttle will do, so long as you have the card that is!!!
