As some of you would know, the LE's have a starting issue. The issues have been addressed by Gouki's wiring diagram of a relay between the starter motor and the starter button..which works a treat wink

So off i went to maplins today to get the stuff required ie relay, wires, connectors..etc.
On my way back from maplins, I was exiting the motorway when suddenly a deer ran in front of me! I really didn't see it coming and it took me a while to realized it was a deer after hitting it. Poor bugger rolled a few times..but luckily i wasn't travelling that fast so the deer just got up and ran away..

So in the process of braking to avoid hitting the deer, i stalled the car..and because of the LE's issue of usually refusing to restart when the engine is hot, I was stuck in the middle of the road!doh..

Thankfully there were a few good samaritans out there that helped me push the car to the side of the road...although there was one car that honked and the driver showing some unfriendly gestures..jack ass...can he not see that someone has broken down???

Anyway,..there i was stuck by the road side, waiting for the car to cool down and hopefully fire up again. Waited for a good 30-45 mins without any luck so i decided to wire in the relay i got from maplins there and then. Luckily i had the needle nose pliers in the boot...and ofcourse gouki's diagram

After 30mins of nervous wire cutting and tinkering, got the car started! It was only later when i got back that i realized the deer left me something to remember..a golf ball sized dent at the corner of the bonnet..doh!

Many thanks to Gouki, bockers, rog from powerfiat, and others who responded to my pm's and assisted me in this wiring issue. Cheers guys.

Is this an inherent problem with Le's specifically??

It can be. Alot of LE owners seem to be experiencing it maybe for the fact that the LE's don't come with a relay wired to the starter button unlike the Plus's i think

According to Fiat ALL coupes with a starter button have a relay.

However in reality it appears that the LE's don't (unless someone can tell us otherwise). As far as I am aware the starting issue has never occurred on any other non LE coupe that has a starter button.

The cars been fine Dougie. Cheers for asking. Since owning it i've spent wayyyyyyy too much money on it ...as expected laugh Its about time i got it the starting thing sorted i suppose,..been stuck by the road way too many times and i think the deer was sent by god to tell me i should sort it by the road there and then!

Since ownership, got a few other things sorted like 2 new tyres, alignment, brake shims (although the squeeling came back a few days ago!grrrrr), boost gauge mounted on nomad pillar, new rocker cover, apexi induction transplanted from the punto tongue , and
bumpers refinished..

Tried fixing the cd changer but failed..

With the new dent on the bonnet i might get it refinished but been really stretched to the limit this month,..so might try sorting it myself first with the hairdryer/co2 spray can technique and see how it goes..

Someone on here took their coupe to a local garage, and apparently a piece of metal was causing the squealing...you could look for that? I don't know what brake shims are, so if that's what brake shims are meant to do then this was a pretty pointless post.

there is a relay, but my autoelectrician changed it for a more heavy duty item and reconfigured the wiring, from what i can tell the black and grey wire is now not used and replaced with a direct 12v feed from the battery. It hasnt failed to start since but i have lost the safety feature on the button, does the above mod do this too? Deano

Guys i need help again...the relay doesn't seem to work now. I've checked all wirings..in fact i've changed all the connectors as well making sure there wasn't anything loose. That didn't work..so i tried replacing the relay itself as well..still no joy..what could it be?? I get a clicking sound on the relay each time the starter button is pressed but no clicking sound on the starter solenoid. So theres a connection to the relay but somehow its not going to the solenoid?

Could it be something to do with the wire gauge? Thicker wire? But it worked before!! Doesn't make sense!! aarggghh

It could be the gauge of wire or if the relay is tripping it could be that the high ampere side of the relay has a break in the circuit. With a test meter you should check the output from the relay to the starter solenoid.

Also check the state of the battery, if under 12v the solenoid might not activate anyway. Modern batteries fail spectacularly with little of no warning. One day they will be fine and the next day a cell will fail and the remaining may not be enough to trip the starter solenoid.

If it was the battery, I would have problems starting with or without the relay right? The thing is it starts fine without the relay. Soon as i plug the relay back on, it doesn't start. Will get a test meter and see what i get from it..

safety feature - from the factory, if u press the starter once the engines running, it wont do anything, if i press it the starter engages and spins.

Grey and black wire on the relay.

Grey and black wire on the relay? Where is this relay that you say is already on your LE Deano?

under the standard air box intake port and next to the ebv, although mine was hanging by its wires to the left of the battery.

Found the relay you are talking about. Is that really the mysterious starter relay on the LE? Anyone else can confirm this?

Still no joy sorting mine out...got thicker gauge of wire for the relay connections but still ain't working..
