I've tried searching the forum, but can only find results relating to the inferior 20vt.

What is the maximum/optimum boost a standard 16vt should be running? I have just installed a boost gauge and PRV, and need to set the boost. I currently have it set at 0.95 bar in 4th and 5th.

Thanks

Nick

what other mods have you got? I would say 1.0-1.1 bar is the safe max on a factory IC, above 1.2 bar and it can't cool the charge and you will likely crack the plastic end tanks.

In saying that the evo cars chip overboost to 1.4 and holds 1.2 and that is safe (ish) on a standard healthy engine

Thanks Saint,

My car is standard, apart from a drilled airbox! wink

I think i will just leave the boost at 0.95 bar to be on the safe side then. Even at 0.95 the difference with the PRV is amazing. With my standard EBV my boost would soon tail to 0.6 bar in 4th and 5th, but now 0.95 - 0.9 is held through the revs! Very happy with it! smile

what chip?
stock or EVOCARs?

I'd keep it around 1.1

Well i have just come across this in the 16vt tuning section, so will reduce my boost to 0.8 bar i think! cry tongue

Oh well, 1.0 bar boost was nice while it lasted!

Quote
A standard 16vt should have the max boost at 11.6 psi (0.8 bar), it should overboost to 15.2 (1.05 bar) for a second or two and then fall down to the normal full boost of 11.6 psi (0.8 bar).

the vacuum should be between (0.6-0.8 bar) thats 8.7 - 11.6 psi in the negative scale.

with the evo chip the car should run on max boost at 17.4 psi (1.2 bar) and overboost with 21 psi (1.45 bar).

doesn't sound right to me.
The whole "overboost" thing is misleading methinks.
[at least what I read/edit in TunerPro has nothing to do with what the quoted abstract above says]

There is not a constant boost throughout the revrange. And there isn't a constant safemodeentry (if I can call it so) threshold in boost over the revrange either. I've not got the time to get the values for the stock chip off TunerPro atm. I have posted them before in similar threads (maybe 6months or more ago)

Don't worry too much about that info from the "16VT tuning the knowledge". I collated that data from different sources to keep it all together in one place but alot was just info I had got off the forum.

1 bar is safe I would say, I have run 1.1 bar for a year without issue but I do have a FMIC. 1 bar should be fine on a healthy engine.

The evocars chip available from Paulinho will lift the boost to 1.1-1.2 bar and is meant to be fine on a factory setup

Cheers

Ok, well i will leave it at 1.0 bar for the time being, i don't really drive my car that hard anyway! After fitting the boost gauge i am amazed at how little i actually use the turbo at max boost. I only seem to get it upto 0.5 bar max with steady acceleration!

I'm such a good boy.......... most of the time! laugh
