Hello , Quick question, stripped my engine down today and the pistons had markings on them 2B2 which IIRC is a 82 mm piston, but 1 of the pistons has 2B1 on it, any ideas if the means its a different size? Thanks G smile

If your car was built on a Friday then it could be anything Seriously though, 90% of engines are 2B2. If you have a 2Mx code on them or other code then your engine has already been overbored to the first oversize. It is always worth checking what they are so you don't end up with useless bits (be it rings or pistons)

I can't find it exactly, but in the workshop manual it show 3 different size for pistons and cylinder bores - no obvious codes on them though. Chapter 0:10 page 8.

Pistons (in mm)
A = 81.952 ~ 81.962
B = 81.959 ~ 81.971
C = 81.968 ~ 81.978

Cylinder liner/bore (in mm)
A = 82.000 ~ 82.010
B = 82.010 ~ 82.020
C = 82.020 ~ 82.030

Coupled with this

Looks like 4 of your pistons are B and 1 is A.

Phew that looks like good news, the piston is actually a bit smaller. Had horrible thoughts of them making a mistake when boring it out, and over boring it which would of made my forged pistons no good for me. Have being measuring them with a digital caliper I bought from aldi's crazy and they did not seem to be far out, only compared them to my forged pistons and they are around .25mm smaller than a standard 2b2 is that right, think i may give barbz a ring. oh and thanks for the help guys. G

Be quick - I think he leaves today

P.S When measuring the piston remember that they taper at the bottom a little.

if you have forged pistons you should use the spec sheet.

You can't use a simple vernier as you won't get the diameter accurately.
I think you may need to get the 2B1 cylinder honed out such that it is a 2b2 spec.

You'll need to check your bores haven't ovalised at the top due to the compression stroke

Hi john, I have not got a spec sheet with the pistons as there markus's old ones.I have spoken to barbz who said there for a 82mm bore, hopefully be going to see an engineer tonight who can measure the pistons and cylinders,the bores do look in good condition though so am quite optimistic, and will be able to see if the 2b1 needs increasing.

Hi, I dont suppose any one has the spec sheet for the 82mm forged pistons as my engineer needs it, as we are not quite sure what size to check the bores for, although it looks like they have gone very slightly oval, but need to know if we can bore or hone them out with out to much clearence , some please help.
