I'm thinking of selling the Coop and buying another (or buying something different if the right one doesn't come along ). What happens to my insurance if I don't have a car to insure for a short period of time, say a month or so? Can I just keep the insurance? Surely the insurance company won't be bothered, they're getting money for no risk

You can suspend the insurance - may even get some money back This is what I did when I sold my car and it took a while to find a replacement

By law you wont be covered if involved in an accident as the new car will have new credentials which you need to inform your insurance co. about in case of a claim.
They only exception are those in the motoring trade, which can drive any car and be covered, almost.

Depends on the company.
Some will let you suspend it (unlikely though)
Most will let you carry on the policy with a different car, but you need to tell them so they can adjust the premium etc.

Cheers. I'm with Noel Dazely so they might be flexible. Can't see what problem it would cause just to let it run.

Technically if you don't have a car you shouldn't have an insurance policy running for one, but unless you're planning to commit some form of fraud the insurance company are unlikely to be bothered and as you've zero chance of making a claim in that time there's a very limited number of things that can go wrong.

You could still be insured on a car you don't own

No you can't, except for a car you're buying under a hire-purchase scheme, or similar.

Think Fergus means he would still be insured 3rd party to drive someone else's car, if he had fully comp, on his current cars policy?

When insuring cars they ask you if you are the owner or the registered keeper. My gf's car is owned by her, but i'm the registered keeper and the policy is in my name as i'm the main driver. I've also had curtesy cars added to my policy that I neither own nor registered as keeper while my car has been off the road However having the same car physically insured twice is a grey area that I'm sure someone in the industry could clear up.

No, when you insure a car they ask you if you are the owner and the registered keeper.

If you don't own the car in question then you have no insurable interest in it, therefore you can not insure it.
Like, for example, I can insure my house against it burning down, because that would cause me loss, but I can't insure your house against burning down, because that wouldn't cause me financial harm.
