I'm preparing a coupe for hill climbing, and I've put the coupe on a diet. I was thinking of replacing the PAS with a much lighter standard rack (throw away the PAS).

Has anyone got any experience of doing this, if so, what rack did you use?

Many thanks for your help

Don't do it - you'll never get round the corners. We've taken 400kgs out of the kappa but would never consider non-power steering in it

At very slow speeds it will be heavy, but why won’t I get round the corners without PAS?

Disconnect it and try it! My road kappa has a habit of trashing the power steering hoses, even changing lanes on motorways is a muscle building exercise

Have also raced an Alfa 164 which had the pas disconnected - too much like hard work

dont do it, i raced twice without it my hands hurt so much towrds the end of the race i was having to take wider lines, that was with the slower tipo rack. I've now reinstalled my PAS, thank god its heaven.
You're welcome to ignore myself and Nyssa but we do speak from experience.

Rich, Nyssa

Sounds like good advice. I'm glad I checked with you first before going ahead - I'll keep the PAS.

PAS with the pump/fluid just removed will be a lot worse than a proper non PAS rack. A non PAS Tipo rack should plug and play in a coupe but the steering will still be pig heavy.

Non PAS Tipo's drive fine, my race car has no PAS. However they are setup with a lot less castor and that is not a good thing. The early Tipo's can be setup for PAS or no PAS. Mk2 Tipos and Coupes etc can only be setup with castor to suit PAS.

PAS adds a lot of weight and I really dont want to add weight. However Ive decided its worth adding PAS just to get the extra castor. I did try PAS castor setting without PAS and it was undriveable at slow speeds. The steering was just so heavy.

When you get up to speed though you`ll have to deal with the centrifugal force of the wheels too, which will add to the force need to turn the steering .
