I found it rather easy. As long as you bolted the turbo to the manifold before fitting it to engine.

Right, well the 6 speed gearbox project is being aborted, due to the fact, after lining the engine up and then finding out the front gearbox mount (one to the chassis arm) is actually 2.5cm shorter than the 16vt gearbox, means i'm not going to muck about to try and fabricate something up, just going to drop the engine tomorrow and fit my spare 16vt gearbox back on (which i spent today preparing it, not done that well, but don't have the time to do a proper job) and re-fit the engine. In this pic you can see the engine mount is not sitting flush with the chassis arm, showing the difference in length

Pity... Would it be too difficult to fabricate a strong plate (say 10mm thick) and drill the appropriate holes to mate the chassis to the holes in the mount? V. PS. need to edit your sig now

Well i'm still comtemplating on what to do.
I may see about getting the arm chopped and extended the extra 2.5cm to make it fit properly.

How does that work then? Surely as they can both be fitted to the 20VT they must line up with chassis leg. Early 5sp box is the same on the 16VT and 20VT isn't it? You cant swap the arm from your old box over or anything?

I think it might have something to do with the lack of a fifth cylinder.

Ok, but is there such a thing as a 16VT box is what I'm asking? Isn't it the same as the early 20VT box? Or is the engine mount the difference between the two?

Well, after today's proceeding's, the 6 speed box is going.
I tried fitting the driveshafts today and it was a good job i tried this before getting a custom mount made up. The passenger side driveshaft was too short, so when the hub nut was tightened up, it would pull the whole shaft out of the gearbox.
I also discovered my drivers side driveshaft is bent, after it fell apart in my hand, but i also tried to fit the half shaft, that runs along the back of the block and this was too long. I tried to pull it tight using the bolts that mount onto the plate on the back of the engine, and all i ended up doing was bending it.
So next weekend is engine out, 6 speed gearbox off, 5 speed 16vt gearbox on, no alignment issues and no driveshaft issues!

I've spent enough money already on the car and it hasn't moved yet, i really can't be arsed to wait for some driveshafts to be modded to make this work for 1 extra gear. I can sell it off an re-coup some costs!

20V N/A drive shafts will probably work I would guess.
That's why to do the 4x4 conversion on a 20VT you have to move the 20VT lump over towards the offside chasis leg by 20mm or something like that. AFAIK to make the 20VT fit the original 20VT 5sp box has a shallower bell housing than the 16VT/grale box

Nah N/a shafts would never fit the 20vt box, or any part of it, hubs etc.

Paddy, i realise that now, but there were things that pointed towards that it should work. The gearbox is pretty much a direct bolt on to the 16v/t engine, they share the same clutch, it should bolt into the correct place, but as you said, the mounting is shorter because of the length of the engine on the 20vt, but, the overall length of the gearbox of the 6 speed is exactly the same length of 16vt gearbox.

So why carnt you move the engine across so the box is in the "20vt" position?

Is the drive spline protruding the same amount? You could fit a spacer between the engine and gearbox to extend the bell housing (could be done by a cut and shut off your other gearbox bell housing). I've done that before now on a different car

I think so, but, the only worry with that is, the shaft in the gearbox wont be fully in on the clutch and could cause issues.
Either way, i'm abandoning the 6 speed box project

What a shame that you won't have the world's first 16vt 6-sp Coupe but retrospectively probably a sensible move!
