Having owned a Audi TT for the last year what alot of owners did to improve, and also less restrict cold air flow, without affecting the Maf etc ( and even better at no cost ! ) was to drill holes in the standard air filter box underneath so you cannot see it, the results were as good as buying a K&N Kit as tests were done, so what i am asking is have any of you guys out there done this ?

this is a common mod. lots of people replace the standard filter with a k&n or similar panel filter as well. the standard airbox is actually very good on the coupe so there's no need to go for a cone filter (unless you wanted to)

if you dont want to mash your existing airbox drilled ones come up for sale for a couple of quid (literally) in the for sale section from time to time

the previous owner did my airbox (no longer have as i have a different turbo & Straight induction pipe) but the holes were on the side rather than underneath.

hope this answers your question! \:\)

If anyone wants a drilled airbox, you can have mine if you pay the postage. I've got an SIP and Apexi now so the airbox isn't required.

I found the drilling makes it louder, but doesn't improve much else as it's been said before, the standard airbox isn't too bad anyway. Where as I did notice an improvement when I fitted a K&N panel filter in the standard airbox.

I'm pretty sure someone did a rolling road comparison at some point and it was not even a 1 bhp different.

Cheers,

Mark

sorry to go a little off topic but a little clarification is needed!

Anyone know if the 20vt airbox will fit on the 16vt? i realise it a muppet-like question but I don't have the best technical knowledge!

Thanks!

I drilled no extra holes, but replaced the inlet funnel (which is only 2") for a 4" and kept the std paper filter (frequently changed).

No more noise at all yet noticeable more breathing at top revs. \:\)

So - in a tuned Coupe I reckon the std box is strangling the top end a bit.
