Just though of this, what different would mounting the front brake calipers backwards do to the handling? I mean this literally puts it behind the front axle, as compared to the usual mounting position(front). Anyone fancy doing it?

Cheers,

it would lower the polar moment of inertia by a miniscule amount

However, have you thought HOW you would do it? There's no mounting points on the rear of the hub carrier

Well, if there's a will....

Anyway, if it does make a significant difference, then it might be worth it, it not...have a pint \:P

How much does a caliper weigh? let's guess at 5kg each

Moving them from one side of the hub to the other is going to move just 10kg of weight about 250mm towards the back of the car.

You would get roughly the same effect moving 1kg from the underbonnet area to the boot.

Lets assume the battery weighs 10kg (wild guess) - this would mean moving the battery is about ten times more effective than moving the calipers (as well as being 100 times easier!)

A few points worth noting:

The calipers would have to be swapped over (left to right side etc) as otherwise the bleed nipples would be at the bottom. The calipers have 2 different sizes pistons inside for a reason, 1 leading (bigger) and the second smaller. Would these still be in the same place?

Sound pointless to me too.

and fabricating special brackets to hold the calipers the wrong way round is going to add weight/cost/complexity.
Another point to pointless from me then \:\)

Well, if pointless is what we reached at the end of this discussion, then it's not pointless \:P , rather than doing it and resulting in a pointless mod (though cosmetic mods is what most of us went off). I just hate to think that we've figured out what could and couldn't be done and there's nothing left to do \:D

David - you're absolutely right - we need people to keep coming up with these innovative ideas.

Its only through this inventiveness that every now and then, we come up with a new idea that moves things forward.

Nigel, thr battery weighs anywhere from 15-25kg(depending on the capacity/amperage) \:P

Moving the battery to the rear where the spare wheel used to sit was the first mod I did, followed by the carbon bonnet, it really transformed the way the car handles...but it's addictive, so I'm just looking for the little extra cherry on top of the cake \:D
