fine if you want to invalidate your insurance and annoy your neighbors.

Because of the remote start you have to leave the car mobilised, which does away with the immobiliser, which invalidates your insuance.

if memory serves me right viper is part of the clifford lot so has to be installed properly to avoid issues.

O it would be installed professionally and yes its the sister company of clifford. But will have to look into other options then.

Is this right? Have read this on other forums but can't help wondering how Clifford can market their G5 (which I'd like to buy) as being Thatcham Cat 1 approved even though it has remote start functionality as standard.

are you sure that the g5 WITH engine start is cat i? or is it the g5 is cat 1 but with engine start may be not? as i can fit/add a remote start to most cat 1 alarms i want but the cat 1 status is then void

I would have thought the car is still immobilised in the same way as a system without remote start. It's only once you start the car remotely that it is now more of a theft risk. It would be slightly more secure if when the alarm goes off it switches the engine off again?

Here's the product page on Clifford's own site:
Clifford Avantguard

Looks like it includes remote start and is cat1 to me...

But then when you go through the manual... It's an extra module! So maybe clever advertising here. Think I'll email Clifford to check...

The remote start seems to be available for manual as well as automatic transmissions. I guess you'll need a switch or combination of switches to determine when the gearbox is in neutral.

Hi John, I guess you must leave the car in neutral overnight (meaning I assume there's no sensors for the selected gear).

The Avantguard is a G5 bundled with extra modules, yet still advertised as being Thatcham category 1. As you stated earlier, if anyone was to break into the car (or touch the throttle), it would stop the engine.

There's no email address on the Clifford site so I'll contact A-Flux when back in the UK.

Which would rule out using it on a coupe on frosty mornings \:D

hello chaps maybe I can shed some light on the subject, as have been a security engineer for directed for nearly 13 years I know what im chatting about, right here goes.

To date there is only one system on the market at the moment which is still a cat one and that would be the avantguard5.5 but this can be pricey, how ever you can chose any of the clifford range with an IS4 (remote start) as when fitted we do not remove the factory fitted cat 2 but instead fit a little black box which one of your keys must be placed in then this box is hidden very well and then looped in the cars original transponder circuit, this is so the car still needs to see a chip in your key when started normally but when you remote start and only on remote start the little black box powers up and sends the signal from the key in little black box to cars transponder and hence it starts. The car wont start in gear due to clever design and once rs set up if alarm goes off it wont even try to start, and also no one can nick it when running on remote start as the alarm stays active once started so if you break in alarm goes of and car shuts down.

Any questions please ask

Thanks Bouncy. Did wonder how the original immobiliser was circumvented.
Are insurance co's generally comfortable with their customers having the Avantguard 5.5 fitted? And how do you rate them?

Btw, quite right Bockers! ;\) I do fancy a G5 and don't particularly want (or need) remote start but might as well get the whole lot for the sake of a few hundred quid...

Hi Bouncy123,

I used to have a standard FIAT ECU with the immobiliser built in and an aftermarket FIAT fitted alarm. I'm now using an after market ECU so I no longer have the immobiliser. I now want a new system to replace both that can perfom extra functions such operating my remote boot release.

Two main companies here in Canada are Viper and Compustar.

I'm interested in the Viper 5002 or the 7900 with the OLED screen. I'd like to fit it myself as I know the car inside and out.

Do you have any advice?
Am I asking for trouble doing it myself?
How easy is it to set up using the remote alone?
Can I buy the system to fit myself?

Do you have a wiring diagram for the Coupe I can have or details of which wires you typically tap into?

Thanks

John
