I'm currently selling my coop on here and in the Autotrader, over the last few days I've had a few emails from people abroad telling me they want to buy the coop and will pay £200 over the asking price and have added another £4000 for shipping costs. They tell me that they will send a bankers draft and once cleared they will ask their agent to collect the car? Has anyone else come across anything similar?

I had one with my previous car when the scam 1st started and couldnt believe it when someone offered £10000 and shipping money, but knew it was too good to be true, so rang autotrader and a few places, somehow when you accept the money it clears in your bank, gives you enough time to sort out and let the car go, then the money is disappearing from accounts (dont know how) so im glad i didnt let mine go to these scamming w*$kers. Hope you sell the car properly

Something to do with the way the banking system works, it takes a long time to clear the cheques properly. So the money appears in your account and then the cheque bounces and so it's removed from your account.
Of course, by this time the car is long gone.

So can you pay it into a spare account and withdraw the cash as soon as it appears? If you make it clear that you wont give them the car until the bank has confirmed in writing that it is 100% cleared, then the bank cant come chasing you for it.

Yeah, I know, that wasnt my point I didnt know that a cheque could bounce after it's cleared though

No sounds perfectly ligit to me.......... YES its a complete and utter scam, just ignore them, tell them to sod off or play with them and string them along, thats the best fun That's the best fun util they come round in the wee small hours with a shootah..... I think the best policy is to ignore and don't enter into any communication. Some of the Eastern European types involved with this sacm aren't to be taken lightly!

how come they can get on here ??
got a message on here as below.
Hello
I am interested in buying the ghia 1.8 that you have placed for sell now, and I would want to enquire about the present condition of the above mentioned, as well as some detail about you. I expect this timely enough.
As for the payment, I would need you to get back in touch with the last asking price as I will be paying with a certified cheque.
Lastly, please forward to me your full company's (or house address, telephone and fax) details as I will subsequently prefer reaching you through these facilities.
Yours interestingly,
Raymond Griffiths
Should you need to reply to me, Please get back in touch with your details to me at:usc200881@yahoo.com for a quick reply.

The thing that gets me is that these people are so OBVIOUS. I mean you normally expect such people to be quite ingenious, not post the same PM to multiple users.
Jaip there's nothing to stop someone signing up for an account here and doing this. People just have to be careful about what they belive.

Didn't someone on here have some correspondence going on with these scammers (was it you JimO) What was the outcome of that. Point me to the thread please Yes I always do it, sometimes they respond and we play for a while and sometimes my posts are just too off the wall and I don't get a response. my last post was this, as he asked for photos, but I told him my monkey who takes my photos was on holiday and he would have to wait until Bubbles came back, to which the scammer replied OK he would wait lol thats great. i would of sent him pics of a coupe thats recently been hacked / crashed i could find on google images

People just have to be careful about what they belive. yeah it is obvious, but it only takes one gulible person to do it and its worth it to the scammer, its just a numbers game really. i dont think they would bother coming over / round to try anything if you do wind them up as its not worth it to them, easier to move on and try to find the next person to con. if you are going to wind them up it'd probably be a good idea not to include your address etc though, just to err on the side of caution

How can you not think that is a scam? Lose the email address on AT, only add a telephone number, say no canvassers and voila, no scammers, just your usual buyers or car buying dreamers

Well if hard cash is handed over then it's fine as long as the money isn't fake or maybe proven later to be the proceeds of a crime It's the dodgy cheques and wire/bank transfers you need to be careful of
