Just going through my annual ritual of looking for a better deal.
My LE over the last 9 years has cost: 98 Barclays £694 (2 broken glass & 1 break in c£1300 damage) At the time they were HUNDREDS less than anyone else. 99 Barclays £750 00 Barclays £850 01 Norwich £700 02 Norwich £570 03 Elephant £480 04 Elephant £540 05 Elephant £480 (first fault! Traffic shunt bonnet/bumper) 06 Elephant £490
Looked first via Quidco.com as the MAJOR cashbacks there can make a big difference. Whether it's because I've just hit 50y/o or not, this year's premiums looking a lot lower with excess set at around £250 and glass c60-75.
eg Prudential £530 less potential £100 Quidco back
Biggest surprise More Than aka MORE TH>N from Royal Sun Alliance a LOT cheaper than anyone else.
With correct LE 6sp 98 car, and their "maximum NCB for life" (ie an enhanced NCD protection) and legal insurance (and including their default courtesy car during repairs), the quote is just £308 and then potentially £75 quidco cashback (I say potentially as you can never be 100% certain of getting the quidco cashback). There's also the option to add recovery assistance/home/recover/UK/Euro for just £40 (which may well be worth considering versus RAC via Tesco Deals for similar, which doesn't include home).
If I do get the Quidco too then I've slashed 53% off my premium in one year and 38% anyway! Still awaiting the Elephant renewal quote due '3 weeks before renewal' ie in next ten days.
Saved quotes are valid for 45 days. Obviously only when I've got a policy in my hand would I know that £ is right, but looking v.promising.
I know in the past Royal/MoreThan weren't at all competitive for me, but this year it's looking very very promising! Confused/etc were showing 400s to usual 1000+

Just one WARNING - do make certain you are 100% sure you put DONT PHONE ME on anything with More Than - I did their car, and then house insurance insurance quotes online - and so far this week had EIGHT follow up marketing calls, at least 3 of them SILENT.
Even when finally got it through to someone that don't want these intrusive phone calls, within 3 hours had another one.
Hopefully now stopped the calls but only time will tell. Somewhat takes the icing off their good price - still waiting for my Elephant renewal notice - but post round here has been pathetic this week.

Well in the end Elephant.co.uk offered me £445.20 for renewal; so went with More Than at £307.57 including Max No Claims Bonus for life of policy - albeit with their minimum accident/F&T/glass excesses of £250/£250/£60 instead of Elephant's £200/£150/£70.
Plus meant to get £75 rebated as went via quidco.com (though so far tracking as "£40", which isn't one of their rebate options!).
Also did the More Than roadside/recovery/home/etc cover for under £40 (versus alternatives of £47 for RAC with Tesco Clubcard, or c£190 if you're mad!).

Agree it's SO cheap, sillily so if I get the £75 from quidco.com - hence why took effort to post. HOWEVER: Yes I've hit the big 50 with maximum no claims (tho one fault claim back in Nov 2005), sole-driver (though often other drivers means discounts), and it's garaged, and don't live in a bad-place, and it's unmodified, and for sub-10K mileage, and ONLY for SDP (no commuting or business use), so probably got nearly every factor behind me for cost cutting. Though with some others reporting good More Than quotes, maybe More Than are just keen to get some of this sector of business this year. And paperwork arrived today and definitely "1998, 2-door model Fiat Coupe 20V (6 speed) Turbo" If you're going to want the £75 http://www.quidco.com cashback then do make sure you clear cookies etc and go to More Than via quidco.com - I did EVERY time, even when retrieving the existing quote. And it's real nice to find 0800 phone numbers for everything to do with the policy instead of 087x ones! Though they talk about up to £25 fees for amending things - though meant to be able to do it online.

Delighted to report that More Than have duly paid up the £75 cashback promised through Quidco.com so their insurance was quote was (a) the cheapest I found anyway by a significant margin - eg £140 saving on similar cover to renewal with Elephant; and (b) another £75 better after a few months wait. Bet I won't be able to do that well next year though

Why not dude?
Get their renewal price. Then go on their website and do a brand new quote. Then check quidco for the cashback again. Take out a new policy, cancel your existing, job done?

Just an update re More Than from http://www.quidco.com 28/01/2008 as I see they are still being competitive for some, and that's WITHOUT any mention of £75 (or £70 if having to pay quidco's £5/pa fee) cash back opportunity: quote: "Car * Buy MORE TH>N car insurance and get 1 month FREE cover in your 1st year * And, 2 months FREE cover in the 2nd year & every year after that, as long as you stay claim-free * If youve built up 4 years or more no claims discount you can protect it for the life of your policy with MORE TH>N * Youll get 50% off breakdown cover with our car insurance Home "For genuine tracked transactions completed wholly online, you can earn: £75 for car insurance"

Wouldn't touch me for some reason? Only have three points and a no-fault claim against me - someone failed to see such an un obvious colour in the car park (their insurance coughed up ok).

how exactly does quidco work? is it commision based. Do they send you a cheque when you take a policy out with MoreThan ? or do you have to do something else to receive the cashback? Quidco is a site that you have to register at. They, like any other website, collect commission for getting you to 'click through' to a website (eg a few pennies if you just 'visit' but potentially as much as £100 if you BUY a policy - eg my folks bought house contents insurance and got £75 back, but their policy was only £85 in the first place!!!). Quidco take the first £5/year of any of your earnings, but then pass anything else on to you once a month via PayPal or BACS. I've had about £400 off them so far this year. They are just one of many such sites, but quite good. eg see http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/cashback-sites-comparison/Otherwise as others having issues now with getting their Coupe quoted for by More Than - guess they have built up enough risk in that category for now. Hopefully I'll get a great renewal offer from them in 5.5 months time...

more than are cheap but wait till you try to claim Oh yes they are a nightmare!! My car was hit on Monday, I rang MoreThan and spoke to my personal insurance manager (I don't know if everyone has one of these), Tuesday I was contacted by the hire car company, would I like a Mondeo, Clio Sport or Mini CooperS, Wednesday the CooperS was dropped off, Wednesday my own car was picked up, a week later my own car was dropped off and the Cooper was picked up. I made one phone call... Oh gosh what a nightmare that all was
