It is quite easy, the tough bit for me was getting to the wires behind the ignition barrell with my sausage like fingers Ther is a how to. The nerve wracking bit is making the hole in the dash, measure 3 times and cut once! Now there are two ways in which to wire the button up. The one in the guide is the simplest but still allows the button to work with the engine running This may be an issue to you if you have curious children travelling in the fron seat. Using a 2nd relay you can wire it up in such a way that it will not work with the engine running. Also when wiring you have a choice of cutting or splicing into the ignition wires. I spliced into them so that I can still start the car with the key. John

Flaviutti, relax, your English is far better than some of the British forum members! I'm sure it's easy to see that what you are saying is when fitting the start button people must install it correctly otherwise the starter motor can be operated with the engine running yes yessssss!!!! correct!!! wow!!

an even better guide would be to just use 1 relay and an ignition feed that goes out when engine starts!!

an even better guide would be to just use 1 relay and an ignition feed that goes out when engine starts!! Or just use the relay power (negative lead) connected to the handbrake warning light pin switch. Handbrake on = power to start relay, handbrake off = start relay disabled. This is how I recommend the start button kits I sell on ebay are wired up James

yea jap but thats a propper bodge, why not just fit it corectly as car electrics should always be? and use the ignition live circuit that switches earth on engine start/run?? in your method at the traffic lights or traffic jam/junction etc the button is still live!

I`ve just got mine wired to a switched live so the button only operates when the ignition key is in and switched on which is safe enough IMO . I don`t need to bother with putting any other safty locks in place as it`s only me who`s going to be driving the car and i`m not going to accidentally press the button, anyway a curious kid would probably have to have rather long arms to reach the button from the passenger seat if it`s in the standard location . I've just finished fitting my Honda starter button ... pic 1 pic 2 One thing I did find was that the retaining spring clip on the button is in the perfect place for the thickness of the coupe dash. If you carefully cut out the dash, then the button simply clicks securely into place

Thanks Stan It only took about an hour to cut through the dash, drill a hole and then resize/shape it with various files. It was well worth taking the time Paul, you can buy the bits seperately, or be lazy like I was and buy a ready-made kit I got mine from ebay from this shop for £60. The only thing with the kit was that the wiring diagram it came with wasn't quite correct (the ignition wire and live wire were mixed up). And, of course, I have the issue discussed above of the button remaining 'live'.

This is a schematic of the wiring. Basically you need to identify two wires on the ignition barrel: the live that is switched and the ignition wire. I got to these by taking off the bottom steering cowling, and then removing the two connectors to the barrel. This is quite fiddley and requires a good deal of time upside down in the footwell! The two wires can both be found on the upper most connector (I can't remember the colours, I'm afraid, but its fairly obvious with a multimeter). I then simply solder-tacked a couple of wires off the back of each crimped connection, reconnected the two barrel connectors and reassembled the cowling. The switched live goes to relay pin 87, and starter button pin 2. The ignition wire goes to pin 30. A further wire, the ground, goes from any grounding point to relay pin 85 and starter button pin 3. When the ignition is turned on and the switched live becomes live, there is voltage across pins 2 and 3 to light the pretty orange button light When the button is pressed, this closes pins 1 and 2 together and sends 12v to pin 86. The current now flowing between 86 and 85 causes the relay to switch from being closed between 30/87a to being closed between 30/87. Hence 12v is sent down the ignition wire and the car starts

Would one of these fit easily into an LE or Plus that already have starter buttons? mines looking abit aged and faded and this looks like an ideal replacement, if it fits easily and just connects to the exsisting 2 wires, has anyone done this?

found out on here somewhere that LEs dont have a rely, but plus's do, I have a LE, would that make things more complicated? should I just get it fitted by someone who knows this kind of thing??

It is not a job for the faint hearted. You are dealing with high currents and incorrect wiring/fuses etc could have a disasterous effect and potentially cause a fire. I suspect the LE does have a relay, but not sure where In any case it is an easy enough job to fit one and may be wise to be safe.
