I am looking into getting a bigger turbo (gt28rsr) but not sure what to do so need some advise from the big boys smile
i currently have a very good gtir which is making about 270-280 bhp, i know it could make 300bhp with a live map quite easy, but it would be getting to the end of its efficiency. I want about 310-320 bhp but quite reliable as its my daily driver. I love the kick the gtir gives but can break traction to easy when it suddenly kicks in.
I think with a rsr i will have smoother power and it won't be working no where near as hard as the gtir would be at the same power. And if wanted to go forged or more power the turbo is there to do it.

I have afew questions about the rsr if anyone knows them.
-what rpm roughly does the rsr spool with no head work
-Is it ok to run this turbo with stock internals (not silly boost though)
-does the stock water pipes fit onto the rsr easy
-will the gtec2 run this turbo at 1/1.1 bar until i get the money for a live map (will get it checked on rollers for fueling etc when fitted anyway)
-i have a 2.5" h&s dp which is v band, would it be best to weld a 5 stud flange onto that (do i need the deeper flange to clear the wastegate) or get a 5 stud to v band adapter (easier)

I have all the other supporting mods, intercooler, walbro, wiring mod, sip, apexi, boost controller, decat etc

If there's anything else i might need, i know i will need the other parts for the rsr to fit my oil ways etc.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Ash

I thought the adapter would be easier but getting it fitted to the dp would make it look nicer and help the boost creep some people are getting.
But if i do i am not sure what adapter to get for the dp.

Think hes already got a buyer for it. I would be able to get a flanged welded onto my exhaust for cheaper then the adapters though. Just not sure how to get the flanged in the right place to fit the turbo without fitting turbo then finding where to cut. (need to swap turbos within afew days)

Ash, sorry for not replying sooner.

The RSR picks up at 3k and doesn't really begin to push hard until 3.5k rpm. IIRC the GTiR had quite a peaky feel with power tailing off at 6k. In comparison the bigger roller bearing turbo's will be more progressive with slightly more power at the top end.

I don't have headwork (yet) and got 320bhp/302ftlb using FMIC, 5 stud 3" turbo back exhaust, decat, SIP, RamAir Filter, Blitz SBC ID3, Walbro 255 & mod. I do have aquamist but this figure was reached without using it and I ran 1.35 Bar.

If/When you get the turbo off, port the manifold as it'll help quite a bit.

If Cheesy sends me a set of oil and water pipes, I'll include them in the sale of the RSR.

I suppose the other option ash would be to sell your h&s downpipe & get the 5 stud H&s one

Its ok Kenno, I have ported my manifold already smile and it works wonders on the gtir full boost at 2700rpm. The pipes and exhaust flange is my problem part at the moment, oh and selling my turbo too smile
Does anyone know roughly what boost to run a the gtec2 chip with the rsr, i know you have a unichip kenno.

If i get someone intrested in my turbo then i will be pming you my offer for your turbo (won't put it up on here)

TBH, I'm not sure if running the GTec2 is the best plan. I'd be armed with a few chips when at the RR to check fuelling. Nobby had a GTec2 and found out that fuelling was waaay too lean on his RSR. Popping a Gtec1 in saw a 40bhp improvement.

Wasnt Nobby running a barbz chip and then moved onto a gtech 2?

I went from a Barbz chip to a GTEC 2 HF.

- 260bhp before, far too rich and too much advance.
- 300bhp after, much better fuelling (tiny bit rich still).

So the gtec2 runs the rsr ok aslong as i get it checked on the rollers (which i will do).
Nobby what boost are you running with your rsr and the gtec2.

Its a GTEC 2 higher fuelling, day to day its 1 bar then around 1.25/1.3 bar on fun days

It can easily produce more boost though laugh

So its quick safe running 1.2-1.3 bar on the stock internals with this turbo when running good fueling. I will buy a gtec2hf aswell if i get the turbo then will change the chip if needed when on the rollers.
When does yours spool up nobby and what other mods have you got (i have seen you cooling smile very nice, when we was at oxford 1/4mile)

Can get 1 bar ~2750rpm on my lower setting. Higher setting probably achieve boost at 3000rpm, but that doesn't necessarily brilliant - the engine needs to use the additional flow to be properly affective. In other words you can get 1 bar at 1k rpm, but you might not necessarily be accelerating.

3 inch downpipe, decat, Miltek system back with 1 silencer, SIP with K&N, NGK Iridium 7 plugs, Helix clutch, Apexi AVC-R, PACE rad (but was leaking), Smoothed inlet, plenum pipes and throttle etc...

Chris

P.S I still think my chargecooler is the restriction though, so will be testing soon without to see if it make a difference.

I think the graphs show that the RSR isnt really *on power* until around 3500rpm.

Was just thinking that when i was writing it. Truth be told its probably 100-200rpm before 3500rpm.

think that is because you are not comparing like for like. If you put them on the same car back to back I reckon the difference is more than that

Not had a chance to drive it properly due to boost hose issue. Should be resolved by the end of the week. However, my graphs showed it was building power at 2500rpm. I would say its nearer 2700-2800rpm it starts to build power. So i've lost 300rpm spool up.

Thats just from an initial couple of runs setting up the boost before i blew a hose.

think he means each car with the same turbo is going to spool differently due to engine/exhaust/induction setup!

Port your RSR then it will make the same numbers as an RS IMHO.
