I'm sure this has been covered before, so apologies, but I cant find the thread laugh

How the hell do people fit their bikes in their coupes?

I've just tried with my old bike (a 17inch muddy fox hardtail - circa 18 years old!) and I think its impossible!

Please help, I want to buy an expensive new MTB but if it wont fit in the car, it wont get used and then there would be no point in buying it....unless I get a new car shocked

Easy. Pop out both wheels. Pre-mark insert seat pin and remove. 2 TT bikes in boot. 4 wheelbags on backseat.

I just take the wheels off. Put them in the boot and place the bike upside down on the rear seat.

One of these will help. Keeps the roof clean of chain ring marks laugh

Both wheels off and pedals off and handlebar and stem off, then open the ski hatch put the forks through the ski hatch and then the wheels fit in the boot aswell.
Not easy but it's either that or a bike rack and the bike rack would just ruin the look of the car laugh

I use a Saris Bones bike rack that mounts on the boot. The bumper is plenty strong enough for 2 bikes, but 3 is pushing it!!

Yeah, either a rack - or take the wheels off. I've had two DH bikes in mine - wheels off, forks through the seat hole and wheels on the back seats.

Never tried getting it inside but use a standard Halfords 2 bike carrier on the boot. Takes 5 mins to fit and its been perfect even with regular trips out over the twisty roads of Wales and at high speed on the motorway.

If you do end up getting a bike carrier though make sure you pad any nylon straps where they cross the bumper, otherwise the paint can get scratched. I use two old socks with the toes cut off to wrap round the straps going round my bumper, and another old hiking sock over the inboard pedal .... classy! Car had remained scratch free in over two years of biking though smile

Nice to know you could also fit the bike inside the car if needed though.

An external bike carrier will *ruin* your fuel consumption; the extra drag is amazing.

I used to get an MTB in a bike bag (both wheels off and in pockets in the bag) on the back seat.

I've had 2 BIG downhill rigs, wheels off on the back seats. Hopkirk Dartmoor rack also works really well with 2 DH bikes, again with wheels in the boot.

Watch out for heavy bikes on the boot though as it's a bit on the flimsy side.

Thanks for all the replies

Right, I am going to invest in a bike bag for starters and will see how that goes (a bike bag will be needed for this years trip to Morzine in any case laugh laugh )

Looking like I'll be there for the last week in August - mainly constrained by my friend who runs his own business and has limited dates when he can take time off

We're lazy, so wil probably go on a package - probably Alpine Elements in one of their chalets

I really wanted to book a chalet and do it independently, but our better halfs are coming and we'd need to hire bikes for them - at that point it becomes more expensive than a package with food etc. thrown in...
