Spacers, handling mod? #611931

I have heard before that 10mm spacers all round would improve handling because of the wider track even on standard alloys, is this true?
Also the spacers I have been offered are universal fit is this o.k.?
Any help appreciated

better with hubcentrics James, and it is true IIRC.
you'll be needing new tyres too, nice anthracite wheels to go with your gleaming bodywork, so mine will probably migrate to yours when my garage becomes a two coupe garage!!

I got 20mm all round (hub-centric) and I thought I noticed a slight improvement in handling. The wheels are more pushed out at the corners for one thing. Looked tasty too! I also had to buy lengthened bolts. Not to long though or they foul elswhere and the wheel won't move

Spacers that use the hub to ensure they are perfectly balanced, with the crappy 5mm spacers you get with some alloys, they are not hub-centric and the steering wheel shakes like buggery when you do over 40MPH.

Depends, both will have an effect at reducing roll, but a wider track will spread the load out more, improving constant radius grip at the cost of turn-in.

Expect the car to be more vague and less willing when changing direction, but once changed you should have significantly more grip. It would be better for a track than a b-road basically.

10mm is probably no significant enough. You'd be better off fitting wider wheels/tyres.

When I fitted the 10mm spacers on the front of my Coupe, I didn't notice a huge difference if I'm honest. Having said that, having recently removed them, I really have noticed how much of an improvement they gave \:o . Turn in is definitely worse, and understeer much more noticeable ;\) .

Just my opinion, of course \:D !

jay heres my settup,
10mm spacers with 215,45,17 on the front
15mm spacers with 225,45,17 rear,
strut brace
lower brace
bilsteins b4
rear 22mm arb
ok it gos ok round the conners but the best mod i did for that was the 22mm arb never thought it would do so much to the car makes the car feel so responsive and feel as if it turns better

Remember they will stress the hub bearings a lot more though, as the load points on them changes

Up to 20mil will be fine, it's the chav racers that buy wide-body kits and then use 50-60mil spacers that have problems

wider tyres do not increase the centre-to-centre track width. A lot of alloys have more offset than std (ie. ET35 is fairly std for alloys whereas the original 20VT alloys are ET42) so you can get 7mm a side without having to use spacers. If you combine that with lighter wheels and tyres then you can get quite a noticable possitive effect

a smaller stearing wheel will make it feel more responsive although actual betterment is opinion.

odd but there you go...

Just ordered new 18" alloys, and told I will need 15mm spacers and wobble bolts....question is...any idea what bolt length to go for? and what happens with locking wheel nuts?...can't find any wobble lockers! :o/
