Also, I'm not sure that it's really worth doing anymore. Haven't they changed the regulations on this, so you can't have dark tints on your front doors, but dark on the rear. Creating that "Coupe-van" effect?

Mate,I had tints on my 20v,check it out from the big coupe meet 3 pix,its the red coop reg H11 FUD.As far as the law goes, legally you can forget the front windows but the rear 3/4 and the rear screen can be blacked out if you desire.I had my fronts tinted just a shade lighter than the rears so it looked not too bad, cost me £120 ,I was never pulled up by the Federales ,on your coop they will look superb! wink

We test drove a Mini Cooper GP the other week and it has legal tints as standard.

Think Circolo might be on to something...

Its illegal to have any tint on the front side windows. I had the lightest tint, and failed the vosa check so had to remove on my previous car.

Apparently not..

Thats interesting, i had the lightest option available and still failed though. So if there is is a tint that is light enough to pass, im guessing wouldn't be any point in fitting them.

The look im after is probably like steamers front tints (possible slightly lighter) except the same all round.

Bearing in mind my coops ink black with black leather I dont think its worth tinting too much.

I thought the problem with tints most of the time was because the existing glass is already tinted, and even the lightest of tints can push you over the limit?

That's true, the opticool tint could be up to 10% I reckon, so you'd have to be careful. I'm just gonna get it checked before so I know the limit of what I can have, if I ever get round to them. Does anyone know what the standard tint level is?

Incidentally I saw a place that'll do £30 a window. Can't comment on quality like... rolleyes

Mine used to pass mot's aswell. They don't test them at mot's. The only reason i was pulled and tested was after i left a car meet. The police was waiting till we was on the road and pacfically pulled us over with the tints. The vosa guy was in the back waiting.

Well having spent the best part of a weekend trying to get tinted window film of 5 car windows I'd say don't do it.

It's a fashion faux pas IMO, started by SuperChavs/WAGS in Range Rovers.

I can say with some direct experience that it seriously reduces your ability to see detail on the road at night. You've only got to see the raw film to see how poor the optics are and how much light is reduced. I couldn't wait to get the stuff off. It's fccukin dangerous.

Anything over 30% tint on the front windows is illegal, and you would be suprised how much light is already being blocked by the standard tints.

Regardless of what your MOT tester passes, rest assured if you hit someone and the attending police car spots your tints on the front, he will do his utmost to blame the accident on you for your reduced vision. I believe most of the traffic cops are carrying the necessary kit to test them as well.

Really not worth it.

Fair points but as per the OP I want something subtle NOT a pimp wagon. What I am talking aabout would be more akin to 2 panes of standard glass not the shop front to an "adult" shop. I won't be installing anything (if at all) that will be dangerous or remotely close to illegal limits and as ever you get what you pay for - good quality tints should have a minimal impact on optical quality where as something closely related to blue peter sticky back plastic will be shite.
Just looking for comments (positive and negative) and some price indications.

Actually, I came across an excellent forum not so long ago that was all about window tinting. A lot of the members on the forum ran professional tinting businesses and really knew their stuff so it may be worth Googling (that's the way I found it) and seeing if they could recommend someone close to you? smile

Legal-ish. Basically, on the driver's side the wiper must not encroach any more than 10mm into the strip, on the passenger side that is increased to 40mm. Fitting smaller wipers is not an option........

Remember, the glass is there to allow you to see hazards on the road, there are plenty of them out there, so anything you do that reduces your ability to see hazards shouldn't be attempted.

This one is enforced strictly, you may have noticed the dramatic decrease in the number of Corsas etc driving around with BTCC-style sunstrips? Any that you do see tend to have been just applied and not yet caught! laugh

Sunstrips - depends on the police at the time as well. Vosa let me off with mine, as well as some police, but was fined £30 for it once.

Window tints - I had the lightest shade put onto the fronts, but over the manufacturer's tint - which made it illegal.
I had a £30 fine for those once and then a Prohibition Notice from Vosa the next time.

Tinting the Coupes windows would probably cost around £200.

If you do go for a darker tint, it might be wise to get some spare front side windows, so when you do get pulled over and a prohibition notice slapped on the car, you can quickly change them over and go and get the notice lifted.

If I remember correctly, Pentagon are meant to be one of the better tinting companies. Been going for years.

I'm sure they can also advise on legalities too.
