I'll be taking my coupe to the track this year to race my mate in his nearly acquired coop.

I've made my mind up with red stuff pads back and front, but i need new front discs and I'm not sure what's best. This is my second coupe and the first one i got I put grooved discs on it and I totally killed them within weeks.

I'm looking for some longevity mainly, i'm extremely confident with the red stuff as i had that on my last skyline and was most impressed.

Also can someone point me in the right direction for servicing my brembos?

I would suggest a good well known disc such as Brembo for example, and then running some cooling pipework to them so they always have a nice supply of cool air.

i can highly recomend wiperslot discs, go for yellow pads

I ran some 3G 10G discs up front and on the rear for about 2 years, with trackday use also, and they were fine for me. I now run the DBA wiper slot discs, and they held up fine also at Bedford last month.

It's more important that you use a suitable pad and decent fluid (Motul RBF600 being the best £ vs performance) and you make sure your calipers are in good condition (pistons not seized, dust seals not perished etc...) and your front hoses have not perished either.

I'd do a fluid change, change the front hoses, get some track pads (I use Ferodo DS2500, Pagid race range are probably slightly better for ultimate performance on track - although the more extreeme you go, the more compromised they'll be on the road - in terms of being bad when cold etc...) and use any decent groved disc.

Brakes will take a hammering at Knockhill. Best bet is just to keep the number of consecutive laps you do down to prevent temps getting too silly.

cheers for the help lads, how many laps do you think i can go hard before having an easy lap? Do you recommend a brembo seal kit for each caliper? where do i get that fluid?

Mintex 1155's and 1166's are good pads to have.

Also, my mate uses Performance Friction Carbon Metallic pads on his Subaru. The stopping power of them on a plain face disc is unreal. The only problem with them is the sparks that fly off them pit the lacquer on your wheels.

i've ordered red stuff pads because they bit like a pirahna on my old skyline. jurys out on discs though.

I bought two brembo kits to try restore them, is that easyish to do?

I had 3G discs and they warped within 2 months, after getting a refund I just went for some mintex ones Paul uses at motormech with my EBC yellow stuff pads. I went to donnington last week for a trackday and they were excellent, but grooved discs would help disapate the heat better on a trackday.

The red stuff will last about one session at KH and no more

You NEED yellow stuff which is what I run with EBC turbogroove discs. Even then I still boiled brand new brake fluid and turned the calipers gold

we'll soon see mate, can't be anyworse than when i took my last coop up with totally standard brakes. the steering wheel felt like a pneumatic drill and i was close to sticking my feet out the car like a flintstone to stop the fcuker.

I never had an issue with the 3G's - I've also run pagid 6 groove discs from Alternative Autos, which are not cheap - but I have fried them to bits and never warped etc.

I also ran 3G's for 2.5 years, many trackdays etc... all fine. My calipers were in top condition though (one was brand new) so no sticking of pistons etc... to wear the discs prematurely.

Any iron disc would generally be ok (apart from drilled discs - with the problem of cracking) if the pads/fluid are up to the job, having groves doesn't make such a massive difference as people expect. And this so called "warping" of discs that seems to happen so regularly on coupe's (more in the past compared to now, but still prevalent) is nothing more than either worn calipers, or pad material which has embedded itself into the disc for whatever reason. There is no way you can get anywhere near the temps we see on track on the road, so if you warp discs on the road - there's something wrong with your calipers, or you've mis-diagnosed the problem IMO. It's not because you've exceeded the operating temps of the discs, or that they're rubbish etc... iron is iron at the end of the day!

i don't know how a coop should brake but i reckon, it's not massively heavy, it's got big brembos at front and discs that would stop a small car on the back. but my first second and third coop, you always had to stand on the brakes for them to do much. so this time i've bought a brembo seal set to see if i can make them a bit better.

I've had a shot of my mates skyline gtr which had brembos, i've never felt brakes like it, i nearly went out the windscreen

The coupe brakes have a heavy feel to them - when you want it to stop from high speeds you quite literally stand on them.

the amount of pressure needed to stamp on the pedal is mainly due to the assistance of the braking servo - some car's have a lot of assistance (and lose some feel) others have less. The coupe braking system is not overly assisted, but is good enough to brake with a fair amount of force IMO - as long as you stand on the pedal hard enough as has been said! The feeling you get when you touch the brakes in a lot of modern cars (Golf's/Focus's/Merc's etc...) of the car pulling up hard without using much force - is just because they have a lot of assistance from the servo - not because they've got great brakes.

No doubt a skyline has good brakes - I believe the R33 GTRs onwards all come with fair sized brembo's - not sure about the R32 (I have a feeling they have brembo's also). Although they also may have greater servo assitance when compared to a 20VT.

front I got some jobbies from ebay, drilled n grooved. 80 quid, on the back i got some standard discs for 15 notes, ebay again.

front and back served with lashing of red stuff pads. so far so good.

do they take long to bed in? i understand the redstuff is supposed to work straight out the packet.

£80 ebay jobbies for track use.....odds on them lasting a whole day?
