Howdy lads, righty then this is a bit of a tuning and technical question on behalf of " speed " as he doesn't get much internet time.

Right then, 20VT - s Plate with 62k on the clock.

A couple of months ago his car was fine but he fitted a bluflame system including de-cat straight from the turbo back, with a couple of weeks or so his standard turbo started to smoke badly.

Last week he orderd and replaced the seals in the turbo himself aswell as welding his manifold and changing his AUX belts.

He got it back together on Saturday and if anything it is smoking worse than before, it smokes near enough immediately after starting it matters not if the car is cold, hot, on or off boost it smokes, perhaps more so when down changing gear at speed.

So the question is what could it possibly be, kinda thinking perhaps nicked a seal whilst refitting or something.

The kit he brought and fitted also came with a 360 bearing so this was fitted aswell.

Also before the re-seal / work was done his oil pressure was fine, from cold it read 3 bar, whilst hot and after a good " run " it did go down to about 2 but whenever revving above 2k it went straight upto 3 bar, but now it sits on 2 all the time and however much revved it doesn't go up to 3 bar ???

He is thinking about just putting on a hybrid turbo from some where but doing the usual search on MSN / Google it doesn't bring up many places at all.

Where would you boys recommend he goes for a hybrid turbo - New , he has plans of getting a front mount and replacing his GTECH 1 with a 2.

Sorry for long mahoosive post but we're stuck and he's contemplating getting rid lol.

Did he check other causes of smoking before doing the turbo - e.g. the valve stem seals or piston rings?

I can't believe a DIY turbo recon would work tho either.
If he's losing that much oil pressure it must be p***ing out the exhaust or back through the inlet depending what the fault is.

Turbo blew because of the decat. He needs a new turbo. I would suggest GT28R or GT28RS.

No he didn't check anything else before re-sealing the turbo.

We just naturally assumed it was the turbo due to decatting as it was within a week or so of the decat that it started smoking.

So basically then it is a new turbo which we thought.

Anyone recommend a place for a 28R or RS ????

I would get a compression and leak down test done to just verify it isn't engine related but it is highly likely to be the turbo

could be due to wear on the turbine shaft did he remove all the carbon deposits fron the oil seal ring??
i always fit a stagger gap seal to the turbine end

Just make sure you don't get one of these fake turbos off of ebay. Lookup Turbo Dynamics or Owen Developments.

Hi all. I cleaned the shaft and I did fit a stagger gap seal. Whether I damaged the seal when I put it back together I don't know. I will begetting it compression tested some time this week. As for my oil pressure it seem ok until it is warm then the gauge sits just under the 3 bar mark but does go up when I accelerate harder.

How many seals are on the shaft because I have only put 1 on (stagger gap) and there are 2 recesses?

there are two seals one at the turbine end and a smaller one on the thrust bearing

TBH a leakdown test is as important if it is something else it is quite likely to be the valve stem seals

avoid owen developments at all costs, they are crooks, try midland turbo's 500 approx for a gtir spec turbo as long as yours is servicable, better than the 1000 pound most other company's want, and before everyone jumps down my neck have anyone ever tried to fet warranty work done on a turbo?

having bought five from turbo technics in the past all you ever get told is "oil contamination"

yes I had a ball bearing turbo fail under warranty and Owen Developments honoured it, and because they fitted it they refitted the replacement as well.
Please qualify your statement because I have dealt with them extensively over the last 7 years and they have dealt with me with nothing but integrity.

Owens sorted may mate out trade on two turbos for his skiline and TD replaced my faulty turbo and done me trade on a new one too. I have had no problem with either company. The only turbo you want is a GT series so expect to pay around the £600 mark.

oh well its who you know i suppose, my brother in law sent a gt30 to owen's they told him it was unservicable and a new one would be 1300quid he then sent it to another company who re-cored it for 600!!!

and maybe he fancies a direct fit which a gt is not

How would I carry this out?

I have just done a compression test and all seems well. Thanks for the info on where to get a new turbo from. I will take my turbo back of some time next week ( I have got a meet this weekend and don't want to miss it lol) I will strip it down again to see if I can see anything obvious, failing that I am thinking of asking midland turbos to have a look or test the turbo (that's if they will?) If not, its a good excuse to get a bigger turbo
