What do I have to do to get a shiney bonnet!!!!

I picked up my LE on the 28th April with a lovely brand new front-end respray.

The bonnet was shiney shiney shiny love

Two weeks later and it was dull dull dull frown

So two weeks ago I had the bonnet stripped back and completely resprayed, 5 coats Nero 601 and two clear coats.

Once again the bonnet was shiney shiney shiney love

Two weeks later (today) I just noticed the bonnet is dull dull dull AGAIN frown

What the hell is going on?

The respray has been done by two different paintshops now.

I have my 1st Coupe meet this Saturday and now my LE will look nasty in front of the Northern Ireland Italian Motor Club (NIIMC).

I give up! I might join DanDan and buy a Bravo Sporting diesel!!

Have you had clear coats done on the bonnet each time?

Maybe that's the problem?

Your colour doesn't need clear coat - just the paint alone is ok

Fiat put some sort of clear coating on when the car was made at the factory, but your colour doesn't need clear coat/laquer, etc, when having a respray.

Dunno, but strange that it keeps going dull, especially when it's been done at two different places.

Up close it looks like the Black paint underneath has cracked in thousands of minute pieces. It even has a few patches of shiney bits and a few scabs of matt black here and there.

It's mostly in the central area of the bonnet and along the two creases of the bonnet running up from the headlights. the outer sides are still perfect just like in the previous paintjob.

frown

I'm not bloody paying for this respray I can tell ya!

I have a similar problem above my rear wheel arch, which I still havent got around to sorting out.

It was re-painted by chips away after a bad scratch. The colour match is perfect and it's nice and metallicy but it's just not shiny.

I'm going to take it to a pro body shop as soon as I've recovered financially from the helix organic clutch + fitting! shocked

When mine was re-sprayed in Black. I was told it didn't need clear lacquer. Just the colour paint itself.

I'd always assumed Metallic paints needed a clear lacquer, as Metallic paints aren't glossy normally. The clear lacquer then adds the gloss after the Metallic paint has set.

With straight colours, like solid black, you only need the paint, and not the clear lacquer.

It sounds like the paint has reacted somehow particularly if you can see fine cracks all through it. Any decent bodyshop will strip and re-spray this FOC for you, if the job they did before has failed like this.

smile

When I had my car resprayed I was told to watch out for flat/dull spots and when they appeared to go over them with some fine liquid compound (plus water of course) then wax! Car still looks like the day it came back form the bodyshop! smile Hope this helps, Mr C

Danirv, what circolo has said above is right smile

Yours, being Ink Black, will need laquer, as it's a metallic colour, whereas circolos', being a straight Black, doesn't.

Colours such as Black, Sprint Blue, Broom Yellow, etc., are all straight colours and don't need laquer on them.

Ahh, I know nothing about the new water based paints, as we haven't used it yet.

Not that I know much about the other paints, but I know a bit more about those, than the water based ones.

We tried that with the last paint job (April re-spray) and it did no good. The shop even went so far as to hand sand-down the bonnet with very fine wet/dry and repolish. It looked shiney from a distance but if the sun was shining on the bonnet it reflected the thousnads of shiwrly marks in the paintwork, making it look like the bonnet was washed with a brillo pad rolleyes

I'm gonna drive over to the paint guy this evening and book the car in for a FREE respray. Let's hope 3rd time's a charm.

P.s. I got my door resprayed too after some member of the public did this to my drivers door and it's still perfect.

Go figure eh?

I'm getting nervous about respraying my car. I reckon it will cost me a small fortune.

- Front bumper is gash (got 2 spare though)
- Bonnet has loads of chips and a tiny bit of rust (no dings though)
- Doors have loads of dings
- Roof is going funny. Started going a bit dull but now has some white-ish spots on it frown

D'oh!
