My water temp is at 72degC in normal driving conditions (cruising). The oil is normally a few degrees lower. They both increase to ~90degC in traffic.

If your coolant temperature is below 65degC during normal running it may be worth considering a thermostat change (not expensive).

Hi Graham, I found the oil temps in normal running (50-60mph) would be about 40 to 50 degrees, the water temps at this kind of year would be about 70 degrees. As mentioned above, in traffic + hot weather this will rise to 90, but shouldn't get any hotter than that.

My oil temp never goes above 60oC-well what i presume is 60 as the gauge starts at 40 and only has 3 lines between 100, so i pressume the marks are for 40,50,60,80,100,130,160 unless anyone knows different? I can also tell you that the oil runs cooler with the undertray removed-i dont think the oil stat works properly.

Yes, I meant the water temps will get to 90. The only time i'd ever see the oil temps rise is on track.

Greg,

Even spacing on the oil temp gauge would be 40-55-70-85-100...

oil temp gauge readings and water temp gauge readings

Don't forget of course that the ECU uses a different sensor to measure coolant temperature and control the switching on and off of the fans. The fans come on at 98°C (ECU) which is around 90°C on the gauge and switch off when down to 96°C (around 85°C on the gauge). If you have A/C there is a second fan which comes on at 101°C (and goes off at 99°C)

Thank you Dave. After seeing your detailed marks my oil is hitting around 70 and the water about 80. Just wondered if they are OK

70 for the oil is actually a little bit low, it wants to be at 80 really.

Hmm... Think I'll hi-jack this thread..

Changed the thermostat during the weekend, and got my other problems fixed yesterday. Now, after having my local garage bleeding the air from the cooling system, the temperature runs straight up to an indicated 92C and stays there. Oil temp is about 80-ish.
Also, I changed the red temp sensor. Should I have changed the blue as well? The red one was all I got from Steve (AA).

Reading the above replies, I start to wonder what is wrong with my car?
Any tips anyone?

Sounds like the temps are now perfect, why should anything be wrong?

I just thought that the water-temp should be a little lower, around the 85-mark at most. But if you think they are ok, then they probably are

Ok Kristian, I was asleep

The critical temperature is the one the widget reports - that will be somewhere above 79, usually 82-86 in this weather - and no more than 99, occasionally 102 but the fan had better be on then - it switches at 99.

The dashboard gauge seems to read a little low on most cars - 80-90 usually.

OK.. Thanks Neil.

But I still have a problem. I don't have the widget, and my only temp reference is the dashboard gauge, which sits at an indicated stable 92-95 degrees.
That's why I'm afraid the car is running hot.
Is there another way for me to check the water temperature besides the dash-gauge? I would think a thermometer in the expansion tank would be a bad idea if I want a correct reading.

I just changed my thermostat last night and my (20VT ) my water temp is now at 78 when cruising and 81 when at 120 leptons

The oil temp seems to be 70ish, I'll check it next time i'm out in the car!
I'm due a new oil cooler and pipe because I still have the orginal ones on the car

The only way to confirm the temperature is to stick a suitable thermometer into the water near the thermostat; not easy.

Other than that, see what the ECU thinks the temperature is, since that's what it will be calculating fuel mix and timing for.

In these temperatures, I wouldn't be surprised at 90 indidicated. If the fan's definitely coming on, and isn't on all the time, then I wouldn't worry.
