Is your Coupe standard?

it should run on standard unleaded if your keeping it standard. The higher octane fuel is less likely to pink so i would say that you don’t want to use a mod chip if your using the lower octane fuel,.

V Power will also keep your engine clean too and uses some lubricant stuff that i don’t really understand what that helps.

You could just try low octane cheep fuel and buy a fuel system cleaner now and again

I've seen some studies which show using vpower gives a better mpg under like-for-like driving conditions, but if it's a noticable improvement in performance (ie acceleration) you're after, you won't get it unless your car is specifically mapped for higher octane fuels

On a standard car I think you'll find you get a slightly better mpg but no noticeable improvement in performance. Whether it actually has any longer term benefits on the health of the engine I'm not sure - they claim it does, but not sure if this has ever been proved.

For the record 95 octane fuel is what's listed in the Coupe manual \:\)

It is safer IMO to use v-power just in case your car is running lean, the coupe is known to have poor wiring to the petrol pump at the back and 10 years or more of corrosion can't help.
You are talking about £4 difference when you fill the tank so stop being such a tight wad! ;\)

I would say stick with the 98-99 stuff unless you have your car RR'd and can clearly see that the AFR is safe on 11.3-11.7. My car was run on the 'good stuff' for 50,000 miles on a Gtec1 and when I finally had it RR'd (yes what an idiot ), I found that it had been running at 12.5 pretty much across the entire rev band for four years \:o I'm sure the higher octane fuel helped my car...

Apparently turbocharged cars get the greatest benefit from higher octane fuel, and only then if they're making big specific BHP (whether as standard or after modifications), or set up to like the stuff (advanced ignition).

F****** b****** thing...

This old chestnut.

Cannot find the old post but studied by a German company on BMW/Porsche range and in like for like tests Optimax (as it then was) provided better response, BHP the lot. The higher power vehicle you used the more the gain you would see in BHP which at the top were pretty good gains.

The only thing not tested was engine wear for obvious reasons.

FWIW, on the rolling road day we did at Powerstation many years back, the cars that were running Optimax all held boost longer than those running normal fuels, standard and modified.

I definately think any higher octane fuel increases the performance of my standard coop. Smoother throttle response, slightly quicker pick up and just pulls that little bit more. I only have 95 in mid-wales but I fill up when in Cardiff on tesco 99 and there is for sure the difference i've just explained.

I notice the difference between 95 & 99 on my car. It doesn't like BP 97 - it seems to hold back, up the rev range when compared to V Power / Tesco 99.

We've got a Tesco 99 RON near us, I might have to put a few tanks through it, see if it works well!

Never noticed any difference between Tesco 99 and 95 on a standard coupe. There may be a difference of a few BHP that can be measured on a dyno but in terms of feeling it on a 1.3 tonne car, I cannot notice it. Still keeping up with all the latest hot hatch machinery no matter what ron I use.

V-Power is now only 3p a litre more than standard unleaded at my local Shell station, it used to be 10p a litre more, so now the extra economy alone probably more than covers the extra cost of it anyway...

Definately worth putting in V Power at that price difference. In local Essexland, the difference is 9p a litre.

Must admit the v-power is around 8-9p a litre dearer round here too. However, it's stil cheaper than BP ultimate (which isn't as good as vpower) and around the same price as Tesco 99.

If it was me, on a standard Coupe and considering it's 12p a litre dearer, I'd be going with shell 95.

If you move closer to Mattw (so to speak \:D ) then I'd be tempted to go with vpower \:\)

Hmm.. I bet that's still not much help?! \:D

Yeh, same here. It's 9p difference between both, at a shell garage. If Sainsbury or Tesco come into the equation, the difference between Vpower and Tesco 95 is 12p, too. No way I'd bother with Vpower for 9p a litre more, let alone 12p :o.
It will be Tesco 99 everytime if I need SUL.
