Flea, I believe that a 996 Twin Turbo engine costs £30k from Porsche (as it's based on the GT1 block). You can pick up a nice 996 Turbo for similar money that I paid for my Cayman S, although they're getting old now (the £40k examples date back to 2000/01), and getting a Porsche warranty has just become a lot more difficult (and expensive) on them. Lots of people can afford the £40k for the car, not another £30k on top for a new engine!

Bottom line, you need to have deep pockets to run a £100k (when new) car, no surprises there though...

Yes the 996 appears to have two variants, the one with the GT2 block is much stronger. It really made me think, having spent a fair bit of money on the coupe it really is cheap motoring all things considered.

Caymen's are going for what? £30k? For that money the only real comparison is a CSL and I think I'd rather a Caymen.

It's funny, I park next to a grey CSL at work - he tracks his car, although has a baby seat in the back! CSL really does look smart with the carbon all over it/inside. Both in the same price bracket, one has 4 seats and is more track biased, other is 2 seats with a bit more comfort. Standard seats on the CSL are a bit harsh for long distance! The carbon splitters have a habit of catching on London speedbumps also, and are a bit of a sting to replace I'm told. The M3 CS is a good alternative, newer also, and look great. The other BMW is the Z4 M Coupe, although you're either in the Z4 camp, or the Porsche camp, few people "get" both cars.

I work for a Swiss Insurance co, much softer industry compared to investment banking - I'd make more dollars if I was a banker I'd imagine (but I'd have no hair, and no life, etc...). I've seen the guys leave Lehman Bro's at 11pm on a sunday before, with their drivers waiting outside - that's hardcore! Not for me... I like living too much.

Well, I'm currently sharing my driving between a 10 year old Shogun diesel and a 52 reg 1.4 Honda Jazz. Makes me realise just how good the Coupe was \:\)
My next proper motor will more than likely have 8 cylinders, or perhaps 10 of them if I can stretch to it ;\)

And that makes a good point, it's all relative. Jump in a new corvette Z06, and you'll see it's flaws. All comes down to your perspective, and taking the blinkers off.

I think the important thing here is we all love cars, that's why we are on here, but everyone is going to have thier idea of how they would spend 5K or 50K on a car, credit to S1MMA for getting a car he has worked for.
I just know for sure hand on hart no matter how much money there will always be a coupe parked on my drive, yes i want to own other cars, but i see no point in selling a coupe, reason why, they are worth nothing, not in real terms.
If i had 50K to spend on a car why would selling my coupe for 3K make any difference.
We should all enjoy what we have and be thankful for it, oh and when were jealous of a member buying a flash car remember to point out how we would never buy one and would keep our coupe, easy to say when we haven't 50K.

my preference would be cough up under £9k for johns's car and pocket £40k! how that beauty hasn't sold is beyond me but, with such style and the engineering work that's gone into it, there's no other car i'd rather have....

I'm actually amazed to read that some people prefer the coupe over nearly any other car on the road! I mean it's a pretty good car (else I wouldn't be driving it for over 6 years) that looks great from a lot of angles, but there are loads of flaws that often annoy me. It certainly isn't the most exciting car to drive either, but does some things very well.

Now I personnaly would have moved on by now if I had the funds to buy something decent in replacement (or if the 2nd hand car prices were as low here as they are in the UK). A cayman or 911 would be way out of my budget though, but I'd love something with RWD like a S2000 or 350Z. This is almost certainly my last year in the Coupe and will be looking for a replacement next spring/summer.

Why Coupe in inverted commas? Is it not really a coupe forum or are they not really coupes?

As for blinkers, well that depends on personal taste and what experience you have of driving other cars.

Comparing a 15 year old car with modern stuff doesn't make sense anyway. For some, running a classic car is what "floats their boat" irrespective of how much money they have to spend on a car.

I don't think it's blinkers at all some people on here me included think the coupe is a great car no matter how much money they have or don't have, my best mate owns a fleet of cars including a ferrari 360, discovery, freelander ect ect, ask him which car he will never sell and he loves the most, his 1996 yellow 16VT fiat coupe, and at last count he had 4 Million quid in his bank account.
The coupe is not about money or been the better car it's marmite.

Why?

I prefer the Coupe over nearly any other car, even though plenty of those cars may be better technically. If I had 50k and could only have 1 car, it wouldnt be a Coupe, but if I could have 2 cars then a Coupe would be one of them.

Dead easy to slate another car when you know you'll never be able to have to put your money where your mouth is.

Nothing to do with the money, I simply wouldn't waste £50k on a car when all it will do is depreciate.

The Coupe is excellent VFM - as fast as a Boxster / junior 911, looks fantastic, rare and on top of that I could probably sell my Coupe for what I paid for it 4 years ago - Try that with a Porsche !

Not wanting to flog a dead horse, but that's the same as not being able to afford it. Either you can afford to lose the money in depreciation, or you can't (and the proof of the pudding is in the eating).

Good luck anyway mate, I'm sure your Coupe and lovely Audi give more pleasure to you than my waste of money Porsche does for me!

Not as reliable as a Porsche (generally speaking), NOT as fast as a boxster if you factor in braking, ANY corner etc, point to point a boxster would RUIN a coupe.

PLus not as nice quality, no rattles either. Better air con, better stero, better other toys on it.

S1MMA, you're spot on and in a roundabout way that's what I was saying back on page 1.

Maybe I should be more direct. The Coupe is a blinding car FOR WHAT IT IS and represents good VFM given what it is and how old it is; however, there ARE better cars out there. Whether or not they're fast enough to win the MK GP, they're still actually better cars. Face it, guys, it's reality, and try as you might, you can't blinker it with a small wallet.

I love my Coupe which is why I still own it and why it's tucked up in a nice dry garage for use on sunny days, but it's great to run a modern - and different - car. My Monaro will have depreciated a lot more since I bought it than most Coupes on here are worth in total, but like S1MMA, I worked for it so I'm enjoying it - depreciation and all!

Nah, I won it off the back of a packet of corn flakes! 2 for £3 in my local Waitrose, so bargain actually!

It wasn't £50k (that's how much it was new), was between £35k-£40k.
