Yes, at least the right hand end (when standing at the front of the car looking at the engine) will have to be loosened since the same bolt is 1 of 3 that holds in the top mount

Well you don't have too - but I'd recommend doing it that way
You could remove the struts without removing the top mounts - but you'd need some slim ish spring compressors and its a bit if a pain. Its also more dangerous as its hard to get the spring compressors up into the turret.
Remove the whole strut with top mount still attached, thats the easiest way.
