Well done for trying it, I will say that the ecu is a pig, well worth seeing Perfect touch aswell.

NOT ANGEL TUNING AS I READ ELSEWHERE, they are fine for disel boxs but not this kind of thing

I've got a couple of new pictures to update this thread with, there was a change with the fuel rail as I didn't have a FPR fitted to the standard VIS system, the options were to buy an after market unit to fit to the bulk head or adapt a standard 20vt rail, well with it being an Italian design it just so happened to fit without to much trouble \:\)

Fuel rail 1

Fuel rail 2

Fuel rail 3

Fuel rail 4

The car is off to Reddot on Thursday for its mapping

Y'know what's really really annoying about this project? It's crying out for a widget and it won't work with that ECU. Aaargh!

I'd love to guys, but the documentation is so confusing and so different from the others that it's really not feasible.

So this could possibly allow us fccukers to use bigger turbos that have the same lag and boost threshold as a smaller unit? Sounds very interesting \:\)

How about a ball park fitting for the whole lot if bought from a scrappy? Excluding mapping, would £600 cover it?

pm me your email, Sam, and I'll send you the docs. As far as my atrocious Italian can tell, it's something very similar to OBD II using the CANBUS system.

Only just read this thread \:o well done Joe Its great to read something totally different and never done before.

Looking forward to reading the results after its mapping. I bet you'll be getting a few more orders for this conversion if it works well.

With it being a variable length inlet, I'm guessing its got lots more torque at low revs than a 20vt but then has the beauty of the turbo at higher revs so your getting the best of both worlds \:\) Does it make it more economical ?

Ok, Ok I'll update the thread \:D

Right less then a week later and I've got some good news and some bad \:\) \:\(

Well the good news is the car is now mapped and its had it's first run on the rollers

The bad news is, well I'll get to that in a minute \:\(

The good news is the mapping according to Ogri was pretty uneventful really, it only needed tweaking and has dealt with the additions of the turbo very well, I'm sure there was more to it then that but his laid back attitude about the job just reassures me that I took it to the right people to start with.

So at the moment it's running 185 bhp at a max of 9psi boost, the first issue to stop any higher boosting was the plastic two piece plenum, any higher and Ogri said it would pop the seals as it has done in the past on the Alfa's.
The second issue has been the AFM, at 9psi it's off the scale and causing the fuelling to run Rich, I and other believed it would of been to lean so this has come as a surprise really.

So the bad news is the AFM mainly and the second is the plastic VIS plenum \:\(

But !!!

I've been chatting to a couple of people and have had another chat with Ogri, there's a few things to try next week so it's far from over yet.

Firstly courtesy of Tim I believe the easiest solution with the plenum is to get it plastic welded, I'm only looking to run this engine at standard boost so I believe with this mod done it'll easily take the pressure without popping the seals, the second problem with the AFM could be solved by improving the fuelling we believe. At present I've a standard 20vt fuel rail fitted but with only a feed and no return, the feeling here is without the return line in situ the pressure from the fuel pump is causing the injectors to spike, this is effecting the fuelling which in turn may also count for why the AFM is being maxing out, this make complete sense so the first steps are to install a return line to the fuel rail and give it another run. If there's no change then Ogri has suggested moving the AFM to a new position after the inter cooler, the Skyline boys do this with their 1000bhp drifters but it's fine tuning it in the correct position so it doesn't pick up a false reading from the plenum.

If that all fails and the Air flow metering doesn't improve I'm going to have to look at splice a 20vt AFM loom into the VIS ECU, unsure where to even start with this at the moment but it's either that or fit a complete 20vt loom which defeats the whole issue of the conversion, but we'll see.

It's not over till the spanner draw rattles \:D

Cheers Sam, as you say they are not massive issue to attend to, just really hope that solving the spiking helps with the AFM.

But even so I'm still chuffed \:\) I've turbo charged a VIS for the fun of it

i don't suppose you have any graphs or read outs?

have you taken the car back how now then to get the plastic welding sorted and the return sorted out?

No I've left the car with them and I'll plastic weld a spare plenum I have in stock, that way I can go down next week change this and fit a return line to the fuel rail.

I'll ask about the graphs when I see him next week, but I'll be having another power run after the mods anyway.

Without the fuel return you'll be getting pump pressure through the injectors so I can see why it would be running rich.

I don't know much about the VIS fuel control but Im guessing its a different AFM ? Would the VIS ECU cope with just plugging in the 20VT AFM or is it a a totally different sensor ?

Sounds bloody good so far though \:\)

The two AFM sensors are different but to get around this I convert a 20vt AFM housing so that the standard VIS AFM would fit.
